Rivermen preview:

The Peoria Rivermen wrap up their season-opening three-game road trip at Allstate Arena on Wednesday against the Chicago Wolves.

New Rivermen head coach Dave Allison will try to make franchise history in that game. No Rivermen coach has ever brought home a winner from Chicago in his first visit there.

In 2005-06, Peoria coach Steve Pleau’s Rivermen lost 6-5 at Chicago in Pleau’s first visit there.

In 2006-07, Dave Baseggio and the Rivermen took a 3-2 shootout loss.

Davis Payne’s first trip to Chicago in 2008-09 ended in a 3-2 loss.

In 2009-10, interim head coach Rick Wamsley’s first game with Peoria was a Jan. 2 contest at Chicago — and a 3-2 shootout loss.

Jared Bednar? Fell 4-2 in 2010-11.

And now Allison’s Rivermen take their turn Wednesday against a Chicago team captained by Darren Haydar and reloaded with prolific goalscorers such as Brett Sterling, Andrew Ebbett and Andrew Gordon.

One thing for sure, it won’t be boring. Over the years, the Rivermen have always seemed to find themselves in epic contests at Chicago.

When the Rivermen were down a goal with 1.5 seconds left and their net empty for an extra attacker in a must-have game in March of 2011, Derek Nesbitt scored from the right circle to force overtime and Peoria went on to win in a shootout.

Nick Drazenovic won a game for Peoria there on a penalty shot in regulation.

And in at least one game, both teams were forced to use both goaltenders.

RIVER READINGS: The Wolves have opened 2-0 for the fifth time in their history. Three of the previous four times, they won a league championship. ... Brett Sterling notched 22 goals in 54 games for the Rivermen last season, then was traded to Portland. He signed as a free agent with Chicago over the summer, returning to the team for which he scored 28 goals (5 game winners) with 15 assists and a +16 rating in 33 career outings against the Rivermen. ... The Rivermen are 27-33-8 all-time against the Wolves, including a 10-19-5 record at Chicago.
