Having lived in the US and gone to school there I have no doubt Kalif didn't know it was a racist term. In the US it's a pretty common way of describing Asian people particularly amongst Black people.

If you saw the screenshots of his Twitter comments it's clear he didn't know and when ppl pointed it out to him he apologised and said he wasn't aware. He didn't make this up hours later or the next day. It was immediate and part of the ongoing conversation.

And that means it's not racist?

lol, give me a break, haha.

Anybody with half a brain knows that using words like "chink" is racist, unless you're a moron. They're Chinese people, not "chinks".

How come it's ok for us to say "stupid Americans" or "damn rednecks" or things of that sort but not ok for him to use that adjective?

First of all, Americans and rednecks aren't races. The word American itself is not a derogatory slur, and the word redneck describes a certain lifestyle and attitude, not a particular ethnic group.

Mitchell went to college for four years and got a degree in communications. College doesn't protect anyone from being dumb.

I can testify to that, seems to me people who have to find their own way at 17 or 18 get more life experience and figure out how to act in the world. The rich spoiled babies who live with mommy and daddy into their 20s are often clueless about unwritten laws of life.

Oh yeah, and using "chink" for Asians is just stupid. There are other kinds of Asians besides Chinese people :picard:. Ignoramuses.

Poor excuses.

If you like looking at statistics to determine who's better, you're just a casual fan.

2.41 season GAA isn't very impressive. Let's not get into playoffs and his SV%.

Cory Schneider is the next Patrick Roy.

For example, if I ask "What does N.W.A. stand for?" It would be best to not answer that directly on twitter if I was a public figure who was not black.

Both Obama and Romney are hiding money with the Chinese, that was hilarious during the 'debate' they both exposed eachother. Two cheeks of the same ass.

"CHINK" ...

A number of dictionaries have provided different suggestions as to the origin of chink. Some of these suggestions are that it originated from the Chinese courtesy ching-ching,[3] or that it evolved from the word China,[4] or that it was an alteration of Qing,[5] as in the Qing Dynasty (Ch'ing Dynasty), or that the word evolved from the other meaning of chink, which is a small crevice, crack, gap or a narrow opening, being a simile for small or slanted eyes. (Sometimes, the word is indeed employed as an adjective, as in chink-eyed.)[6]
The most obvious etymology is chink evolved from the Indo-Iranian word for China, that word now having similar pronunciations in various European languages, such as Persian.[7] And that the Indo-Iranian and hence European name for China is an alteration of the Chinese name Qin, which has recurred in Chinese history a number of times, including the name of the western kingdom, which took over the rest to form the first Empire. This was the first time the name had been seen, and now it is a very common family name in China and Vietnam (Cheng, Trinh, and similar). Because it is a very common family name, it is impossible to trace it back to any specific time place or person, and the lack of evidence for the coining of the term in English (or any other European language) is therefore not unusual. It is possible that word was imported into Indo-European as the name of the Qin state

Blame it on the Muslim world .. again .. (sarcasm alert) .. :)

Agreed.
I honestly wonder how many Chinese people actually got offended, or if it's just a bunch of non-Chinese people getting upset about it.

This is from "All in the Family". Featuring the one and only Archie Bunker.

This was actually one of the most popular shows on TV in the 70's. Seems it was more acceptable back then. You couldn't air this on prime time now.

The only reason I know that's a racial slur is because of Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino.

Otherwise I wouldn't know "chinks" was a racist term...Unlikely that he didn't know, but still plausible.

In any event, whether he knew or not, he still posted it. The onus is still on him.

Holy smoke, you and the others who don't know "Chinks" is a racist term got a lot to learn. And from living in Greater Vancouver where practically half the people are Chinese! Its like calling black people, "nig---s".

My grandfather still uses that term regularly.

My grandfather uses that term regularly in reference to people who aren't white. Often we'll pass by people of african or latin american descent and he'll mutter "god damn chinks" and I'll look around trying figure out who he's talking about before I realize he's just old.

I rarely ever hear that term used although I still know it's an offensive racial slur.

However, it's not the fact that he used a racial slur that annoys me, it's his ignorance that I find bothersome.

And I'm sure most others didn't either.
I know that people probably shouldn't use slurs such as this, as you never know when it could offend somebody, but it seems that 99% of the time the people that get the most upset at someone for making a slur are Caucasian folk just trying too hard to be PC.

I think it's mutually agreed upon that no one should say "chink" to a Chinese person, or "F-G" to a person that is homosexual.

I don't think using the term is necessarily racist, but it's definitely disrespectful to use it.
