Hey guys,

Most of B.C is still asleep, but here in Ontario the rumour is that Luongo will be traded to the Leafs once the CBA is all determined. It was announced on FAN 590 this morning by John Shannon from Sportsnet and HNIC. The right up is actually on www.hockeybuzz.com.

Thought I'd share this and hopefully it is not true, because I am really not sure what the Leafs have to offer that will help the Canucks in the immediate future (besides Gardiner and Kessel)

Not a chance in hell Luongo is going to the Leafs. I'll bet you my next paycheck. If Luongo gets traded it'll be to Florida. Keep dreaming Toronto fans

Still don't understand the Luongo to Florida ideas. Florida has their #1 goalie of the future, why would they give up important pieces for a goalie with a ridiculous contract that they won't be able to ship out once Markstrom is ready? It doesn't make sense to me.

I also think Luongo will go to Toronto. He would fit perfectly on the team. A leaf fan would love the playoffs even if they get swept and Luongo can bring them to the playoffs. Don't know what we would get in return, hoping Colborne he is going to be something great.

Why does everyone think Lupul is so good? Hes had 3 good years so far spread out over his 8 year career. When he starts doing it consistently (back to back seasons) then maybe...

People think he is good because he IS good. His ppg while he's been healthy his whole career is pretty amazing. His injuries have really held down what could've been an amazing career. I personally wouldn't trade for him because of those same injuries though. It seems like a bit of Russian roulette whether you can expect a big season or no season from a player with his unique set of issues.

Maybe Gillis can pull out Phil Kessel Trade 2.0 with Burke being the recipient again of the established star player :P

Wasn't the whole 'deal in place for Luongo to the Leafs' thing a rumour months ago? Is Shannon running out of fresh material?

Unsurprisingly, based on my earlier tweet, Canucks gm Mike Gillis says all rumors of Luongo to the Leafs are "untrue".

Gillis hinted on the idea of keeping Luongo for at least part of the season in a recent 1040 interview.

He made some oblique references to a possible condensed schedule and you can read between the lines about how useful he thinks having two real starters in that scenario would be. He clearly wants to know how the CBA resolves and then weigh his options.

If there isn't a good value deal out there before the season starts, why not use both guys and split starts. With a condensed schedule and more games in fewer days the chance of fatigue and injury is significantly increased.

We would have a serious competitive advantage keeping Luongo half the season and keeping Schneider fresh for a playoff run by not having to play a bunch of back to backs.

In addition, the suitors and trade returns increase as you go farther into the season. Burke can bluff right now and say he is happy with his goaltending, but when the Leafs are under .500 at Christmas, the fans are going to be having a fit. I also think that because of a possible condensed schedule several other starters are going to get hurt, increasing the overall market for goalies. While that may not directly bring a trade for Luongo (you don't trade for a guy with his contract to cover an injury), it opens up a ton of other options. For Example, Theodore would be a very valuable injury fill-in and Florida could get a big enough return for him in that situation that it opens up a trade for Luongo.

Even if aliens were on Earth, and this so happened to be true, the CBA won't end so fast. So we all have to have patience.

I really doubt Luongo goes to Toronto. Like you said, they have hardly any pieces that will help us win now.

As much as Luongo would like to move back to Florida, the ideal trading partner would be Chicago. They have offence to spare, and defensive prospects capable of competing (i.e Leddy)

Plus it would make the rivalry even more fun to watch. I like Lu, but I'll be crying tears of joy if Lu lets in a softy and it benefits US for a change!

Chicago Players that could be traded/packaged for:
-Hossa
-Leddy
-Shaw
-Stahlburg
-Kruger
-Hjarlmarsson
-AND MAYBEEE Seabrook

Disagree

There are a limited group of teams that are able to not only absorb Luongo's contract, he is willing to play for.

For me a 1st rd pick is the starting point. After that Bozak would be a good replacement for Kesler short term and Malhotra long term. Financially were probably going to have to take either Komisarek or Lombardi for cap reasons.

Bozak, Komisarek and 1st and a 3rd does it for me.

The thing is 2 of Raymond/malhotra/Weise/Ballard would have to be going out as well. Otherwise where do we have spots for these guys?

I would trade Loungo+Edler for Gardiner+Lupul+1st
