But Edler's value wouldn't be zero, even if it doesn't change, we would still get something decent in return, just not as much as we could with a long term deal.

Edler value will be zero in the scenario of the lockout last until next july, and UFA age eligibility doesnt change. In this scenario he would become an UFA with Vancouver not even able to negotiate a contract with him, not even able to trade his right.
Of course Vancouver could always sign him as UFA then trade him, but its usually not a good strategy.
