That feeling when people can't have a conversation with someone else 'cause they're always checking their phone.

I gotta say it's a sad day. Not to say that technology is bad, but there are so many better things. For instance, real people.

But that hasn't overlapped your humanity - I'd reckon it's developed and enabled it by allowing you to see more of other parts of the world, look up historical facts, and conduct research.

Has it?

When my family gets together we all put our cellphones on the kitchen counter and leave them there. There's nothing ruder than texting while trying to have dinner or spending time with people. I feel lucky to have friends that are more interested in spending time with the people they are with, rather than texting everyone they aren't.

Is it the technology that's the problem, or the people that are using it?

I was a Techno Geek before cell phones arrived.

Like BananaMash, I don't "post" when I'm with family or have guests over.

Same reason I don't use "call waiting" - I think it's rude when you're talking to someone on the phone and they say - oh, hang on a sec I got another call coming in.
What that says is, that call that you have no idea who it is, is more important than the person you are currently talking to.

Okay - newer phones now let you know who the call waiting person is - but you get my drift.

I notice on public transportation(specifically the Canada Line, but not limited to) that EVERYONE has their phone out whether it is texting or listening to music. It's crazy to see how many young kids have iphones and all that stuff.

The sad thing is we are guilty of doing exactly what those people are doing in OP pics.

I know I am guilty. It's not unusual for me to be sitting at Starbucks with friends while on my Iphone browising CDC etc.

But this opened my eyes. I'm going to try not to be one of those people from now on.

That is weird. I've been on my phone at a coffee shop when I'm by myself.... but if you're there with friends....

Weird = Of a strikingly odd or unusual character; strange

I'm not sure it weird. I think It's quite common now for people to be on their phone when with friends. Just look around next time. Or look at the OP.

But I do think I need to detach myself a bit when I'm with friends and enjoy the company rather than check on the latest Forex signals or browse CDC to see if there's any news on the NHL lockout.

Getting a text from your wife to pick up some potatoes on your way home while you're having coffee with friends = normal.

Browsing CDC, checking your email etc while having coffee with friends = weird.

This.

My wife and I text each other 2 to 5 times a day which simplified the one phone call instead.

I think there is going to be a revolt movement soon where people unplug and go Grizziy Adams .

"These are the things to keep in mind. These are not just academic exercises. We're not analyzing the media on Mars or in the eighteenth century or something like that. We're dealing with real human beings who are suffering and dying and being tortured and starving because of policies that we are involved in, we as citizens of democratic societies are directly involved in and are responsible for, and what the media are doing is ensuring that we do not act on our responsibilities, and that the interests of power are served, not the needs of the suffering people, and not even the needs of the American people who would be horrified if they realized the blood that's dripping from their hands because of the way they are allowing themselves to be deluded and manipulated by the system."
