NHL Season to be salvaged on Wednesday? Probably not.

December 3, 2012. 4:47 pm

Since I never know who follows me on twitter, or who might not even know of twitter (“Is that a breakfast cereal?”), I might as well put up the latest rumblings from the twitter world for you to munch on (I am sticking to the breakfast cereal metaphor at this point.) At the very least, if your friends ask you about that “rumor I heard about the season being saved??” you can at least point them here for a quick recap of it.

So normally you get your run of the mill rumors from the Eklunds and HockeyyyyyyInsiderrrrs out there who fling poop at a wall and hope it sticks. Usually it is along the lines of “I heard it mentioned that so and so owner is being a hard ass, but so and so owner thinks flowers smell pretty, but player so and so was grumpy because he ran out of jelly beans, but player so and so was pretty optimistic that he could beat Wayne Gretzky in a game of hoops.” Basically they say a bunch of stuff that doesn’t really amount to much (Kind of like what I do, except I’m way funnier. My mom assures me of this.)

The latest rumor, though, comes from what looks to be a solid source. Not a solid hockey source, mind you, but a solid, real, legitimate reporter putting his credibility on the line for this one. The man in question? Steve Burton.

(I don’t know if you can get more legit than posing with Ric Flair)

And what does Steve Burton say about the NHL Lockout?

(This was said on TV by Mr. Burton, so none of that “my account was hacked” funny business a few days from now if he’s wrong)

Of course, the minute we hear such potentially big news, the first thing we think is, “who else is reporting this?” (nobody) and “What is the credibility of the guy reporting it?”

Well, Steve Burton is TV sports reporter for WBZ-TV and WSBK-TV, out of Boston. Steve Burton does solid work covering the New England Patriots, so he is not just some random, hiding behind a mask, anonymous internet reporter. His ties to hockey? Weak to say the least. But as Joe Haggerty points out:

Again, it’s not much to hang your hat on, but the only reason one might want to even think about perhaps pondering letting hope into their brittle, shriveled up, NHL hating heart, is because again, this is a legitimate reporter. You would have to think he would take his time, check his sources, and make sure he had a solid lead to go on, rather than just making a bold statement and hoping to hit one out of the park with lucky timing. (It’s why every trade deadline I claim Crosby is coming to the Canucks, just in the off chance I’m right one year.)

Of course, even the best of journalists make mistakes, or fall for false information, so I wouldn’t bust out your favorite hockey jersey anytime soon. It’s also hard to imagine the NHL and NHLPA getting anything done so quickly in two days, so I am not getting my hopes up too high. It’s also hard to put a lot of faith in a hockey rumor that nobody else is reporting on. In today’s day and age we don’t often have too many “Watergate” moments in sports reporting, where someone breaks a huge story that nobody else saw coming.

What does the NHL have to say about this, though?

Would Bill Daly come out and go “Oh snap! You got us! Season is saved!”? Most likely not. But again, it just goes to show the joys of this lockout. Information and misinformation are coming at all angles. What should you believe? Probably nothing at all. But at least we’re having fun, right? Right? RIGHT???

Sigh. I’ll just be over here crying into my beer.

I think lockout is over. They are going ahead with this player/owner meeting as a public relations thing.

I see both sides come out saying we get along, we understand each other's points of view better now and we are all on the same team, we agreed on a new CBA blah, blah, blah..... now give us your money!!

Thing is with this whole Steve Burton story is usually Dreger will shoot it down right away. I want to believe that guys like him, Lebrun and McKenzie are staying away from this, because they believe it might have some legs and don't want to say anything just in case it doesnt it out to be true.
