Players and owners now in separate rooms talking things over.

Perhaps conferring with other owners/players whether or not to accept a deal?

LOL! I'm sure they don't taste so good. At least there seems to be a better dialogue, with the face of hockey, and his bosses.

I believe that the NHL uses the lockout for leverage and that they were not willing to lose another season and all the revenue it entails. I believe they always had this date in mind to make a deal. It wasn't this magical new strategy of getting the owners and players together that magically started productive discussions.

That's why I think this is getting done this week.

NHL is rumored to have countered the players proposal.

@KatieStrangESPN: #CBA Multiple sources confirm that NHL countered in last meeting
#CBA Semantics, but not sure it's accurate to characterize either as full-fledged proposals, but rather countering on key issues
#CBA Not yet clear whether two sides will meet again tonight. As NHL side did earlier, have to imagine NHLPA will want to caucus internally

NHL countered NHLPA's proposal. Doug Maclean says both sides are working to get done by Friday.

It seems they are just countering on semantics, the fine print if you will. I can't see this lasting till Friday if the substantive issues have been dealt with. I'd sure like a transcript of that meeting though.

Begs the question, who wins in all of this? What a charade! Then they wonder why the NHL ranks behind tractor pull in the US of A. Especially those prosporous southern markets.

No one wins, it's just so stupid to use a lockout as a tactic. The owners are all smart guys so I don't think they don't realize the harm it does. It must be their egos getting in the way. I just wish I could be more of a fickle fan like those southerners and not come crawling back each time.

NHL wants the CBA length to be 10 years.

Good, fans and sponsors like 10 years guaranteed.

Nick Kypreos@RealKyper

While #NHLPA offers more, important 2 note significant issues remain. #NHL who offered shorter term #CBA deals, now want as high as 10 yrs

Hmmm... If everything continues to go smoothly this will really hurt the World Junior team. Oh well, can't have everything.

The bargaining committee on either side can't just accept a deal. They can endorse a proposed deal to their respective sides but there has to be a vote by the members to accept or reject. There is no such thing as wholesale acceptance by a bargaining committee at the table. And even then, it's not a given that the membership votes in acceptance.

It also means Corrado has a better shot to make it. Expect Hamilton, Murray, Murphy, Reinhart, Rielly and Dumba to make their respective teams. Corrado could be seeing top 4 minutes for team Canada :).

It'd be great to see Corrado on the team.. and there would be other very capable guys to step up too.

Either way, I don't think I could care less about who's on the junior team if we get our Canucks back!

Enough owners are there at the BOG meeting that the owners side could likely accept a deal.

If the players in New York tell the other members that they have a good deal in place, I'm sure there would be no issue with them accepting it. Players trust each other.

While all that is true, I would be shocked to see the membership on either side reject a deal that is being recommended to them.

Ya I think it's been said that 8 owners counts as a majority (I'm not entirely sure how this works out), 6 of which would have already agreed to the deal brokered.

I thought it was that it only takes 8 owners to prevent a deal, meaning that it would take 75% to accept it?

Maybe you're right. The 6 in that room though represent all the different markets, have to figure that those signing on would represent a majority.

A majority vote is 23 which could easily be accomplished by conference call.

Yep. it's a stupid system designed by Bettman to protect the weak market teams.

How does it make sense that you can have over 2/3 of the owners accept a deal, but if there's less than a 1/3 that don't like it they have the power to reject it....

Or it's designed so that a small contingent of owners can control the league, or Bettman can, or Jacobs.
