It's like the NHL didn't actually intend to get a deal done, only to get the PA to think they were actually negotiating so they would offer additional concessions in the interest of getting a deal done that the NHL could use as their new starting "you have to give up more from here" point for the next round of "negotiating" until they get the deal they originally wanted. Isn't that basically what happened during the last "productive" sessions?

This is really bringing out my (previously undiscovered) sailor ancestry.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. Seems to me they're forgetting that they're hockey fans as well as business men.

A league of selfish owners who don't care about the game.

Can't wait until the season is lost and the NHL is unable to recover from this.

The owners are a bunch of babies. If the NHLPA counters and it's different than what they wanted, they just cut off talks, just like that?

It's pretty clear who wants to play hockey and who doesn't. The NHL is way too quick to just quit and cancel more games. Such a bad negotiating tactic on their part.

Why is contract length even a huge issue for them. Owner's already have the power to control contract length...

Enough. I'm not spending another penny on the NHL until Bettman is let go. I'll just stream games online.

Apparently $300 make whole and 10 year CBA length and other things are interrelated, not separate from other issues. Apparently Fehr plucked those out put them in his back pocket and attempted to get owners to move on other things.

Even TSN host and ex player is agreeing this is what's going. His excuse is NHL did similar thing in 05 with 24% roll back.

Bettman on right now. Looks like he's constipated, looks like he's about to blow a gasket.

Time to desertify or put the salary cap back on the table. The NHL owners are a joke.

Gary makes it seem like the Owner's are the one's giving.

THE PLAYERS HAVE GIVEN OVER A BILLION DOLLARS.

And they think offering 100 Million dollars of the contracts they signed and agreed to, is a huge movement.

Give me a break you crybabies, why don't we lock all the owner's in a room with a binky and a baby bottle full of milk until they get it through there heads that this won't be a landslide victory and that they have to give a little bit aswell.

Un-fricken-believable, what a bunch of greedy bastards, I wish I didn't love this game and this team so much so I could just turn my back on the whole NHL, seriously debating it though... This is getting frustrating, I can imagine how the players feel about the whole thing.

Bettman: Union is suggesting their moves mean sides are close to a deal..moves were dependant on union agreeing to other issues, and haven't

The nhl and the owners should be careful what they wish for. They might think 5 year max contracts sound like a good idea, and on the surface they are, as they protect them from a 10, 12, 15 year contract on an investment that is far from being a guarantee. But what about when Sidney Crosby walks away from Pittsburgh after a 5 year deal, what if Stamkos, Giroux, Tavares do the same?

The owners are going to handcuff themselves so much that they are going to regret it after they start losing these superstar players that they invested signifcant time and development in. 7 or 8 year max contracts makes more sense for both sides.

8 year or 5 year, if the player doesn't wanna play for a team, the player can hold out to be traded. We've seen it happen countless times to know that a contract is irrelevant if the player wants out.

I don't think a 5-year maximum on deals have serious consequences for the owners.

If anything it's better because they can sign other team's superstars - keep in mind for every team that loses Crosby, Stamkos, Giroux, Tavares, etc, some other team gains them and their revenue goes up.

Athletes today are scared to make Muhammad Ali Statements.
