Simple: Owners give on the cap and set at $65 million and players give on the length of contracts. Pensions shouldn't even be on the table. If these guys can't manage to put some of their millions away in RRSP's then too bad. Pensions are for us working class. Drop the puck!

McCoy: We were speculating. Is God really out there?
Kirk: Maybe he's not out there, Bones. Maybe he's right here. [points to his heart]

2 buyouts you say??

Hmmm... An interesting way to circumvent would be to buy out your stars, with an under the table agreement to sign them to an deal with a lower cap hit, thus making the "buyout" a bonus...

For instance, Gillis could make a deal with the Sedins, buyout their combined 12.2M, and re-sign them to identical 2 year deals at 8M (4M per + the buyout money) and save the cap around 4.2 million...

Sign Edler buy him out, sign him for league minimum. Save over 4M.
I wish it were that easy.,

Handzus, Glass, Tyrell and Stoner leave Slovak Extraliga team:

Four more locked-out NHLers bid Europea adieu on Wednesday as Michal Handzus, Tanner Glass, Dana Tyrell and Clayton Stoner announced they’d be leaving Slovak side HC Banska Bystrica.

As we’re wont to do at PHT, here’s the glorious Google Translation:

The management of the club and this opportunity to thank all three players [Glass, Tyrell and Stoner] for their absolute professionalism, great-way communication in the cabin and in the management of the club, a selfless willingness to help young players in the team as well as their performance, which could draw viewers into considerations not only in Banska Bystrica but also in the cities where they played their extra league game.

Especially huge thanks offspring Banská hockey Michal Handzus, who did not hesitate a moment and joined the team from under Urpín immediately after the start of the NHL lockout. He did so without compensation or any other costs while the insurance is paid by your own means. Michal their performance on the ice as well as the overall gaming action in the cabin greatly help the team and not just for the sports page, and proved to be Banskobystričanom all your soul.

“Gaming action in the cabin” is a new personal favorite of mine.

OK, so the end tally for all four guys…

Handzus: 9G-10A-19PTS in 19 games

Glass: 0G-1A-1PT in six games (with 75 PIM!)

Stoner: 1G-4A-5PTS in eight games

Tyrell: 0G-3A-3PTS in four games

Of the four, only Handzus is going into a contract year — the two-year, $5 million deal he signed with San Jose prior to 2011-12 expires this July.

What's with players returning back? I heard Schneider could return home as well.

Sign Edler for league minimum then the janitor accidentally leaves a duffel bag of 100$ bills in his locker.

OK, I'm starting to miss NHL hockey now.

It hasn't really bothered me until now. If they can salvage this season I might find it in my heart to forgive them.

There is normally a clause where you can't re-sign your own player in case of a buyout.

My understanding has always been that NHLer's wanted their money up front and not through a pension as they could pursue tax advantaged investments rather than a managed pension plan. The really sad story was how many players got ripped off by Eagleson.

I have hit the wall: i can not contain my optimism any longer. I know I might be opening myself up for a letdown but they are really so close.

If the players want 65m next season for the cap i think the owners should fold on that point. 150m is the cost of getting the deal signed...amortize that over 8 years and its a mere 625 thousand per team to chip in per year for the length of the CBA to cover that increase in costs for salaries next season. COMON we are now arguing over a Rory Fitzpatrick's worth of money per owner per year.

The cap ceiling/floor, revenue sharing, and parity are all tied. Hopefully Bettman can let the parity slip a little and grow that 16m just a little to get a deal done.

Or he could bring the floor down slowly as well, as much as some of the bottom teams would like otherwise. That would keep the $16M gap, and there could be a similar amnesty for teams to use bonuses to reach the cap floor as there is for teams to buyout players until everyone has been able to make the adjustment to where the NHL wants to get to.

Parity is going to be affected whatever you do, but not more so than it is already. If he forces top spending teams to come down too quickly, then the parity will be made much closer and probably allow those bottom teams to pick up players at a more reasonable rate they otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.

For instance, Ballard could be useful to a number of teams, but not so much at $4+M. Same with Booth, who would likely be even more coveted if he was bought out due to the cap being so low and none of the lower teams wanted to trade for him at that price.

It ends up being another way for the league to help out the teams at the bottom end of the financial ladder and make the league look better as a whole without actually fixing the bigger issues like Phoenix.

Another player leaving. From the Braehead Clan site.

"It's Miller Time

As you may be aware, Braehead Clan have been lucky enough to have NHL player and Detroit Red Wings star Drew Miller on the Clan Roster for the last few months, thanks to the NHL lockout. As talks around the table between NHL owners and the NHL Players Association continue, it looks like a resolution may be on the cards, and the NHL season will soon get underway.

Braehead Clan would like to thank Drew for joining us during the lockout period. It has been a pleasure to have him and his wife Coleen join the Clan and we are sure that both fans of the Clan and EIHL fans in general have enjoyed watching Drew ice for the Clan over the last few months."

The lock-out needs to end. I just learnt that on opening day Pittsburgh and Philly would be playing against each other. What a way to start the year.

@DarrenDreger: Players voted yesterday to give Don Fehr full authority to decide on Disclaimer last night. Obviously, D.Fehr decided against it.

@aaronward_nhl: As we discussed on #TSN this morning, small meeting dealt with the NHL changing penalties for 'hiding' HRR.The issue has been resolved.

@aaronward_nhl: NHL has gone back to original language on HRR after they changed the language this week.Severe penalties still apply.
