Conservative government’s order of succession shows Canada isn’t ready for a Cylon attack

Unfortunately, if the Cylons attacked, Canada doesn't have a 43rd minister in the order of succession to step up and become president of the Twelve Colonies.

OTTAWA — During the minority years, Prime Minister Stephen Harper forged a reputation for running government like a one-man show, brooking no argument and taking every important decision.

That image has receded since the Conservatives won a majority in May 2011, but Harper is still the unquestioned man in charge.

Still, a government has to be ready for any eventuality, and so there is a list of succession that has been compiled if Harper is “unable to perform the functions of his office.”

Who, then, would take over if the unthinkable happened and Harper were not available?

The answer is Senator Marjory LeBreton, according to an Order in Council that was published earlier this month.

It’s a position the leader of the government in the Senate has held since shortly after the May 2011 election, before which then-foreign affairs minister Lawrence Cannon would have served as acting prime minister.

Exactly why LeBreton?

A variety of reasons, no doubt, but ultimately because she is vice-chair of the all-powerful Cabinet committee on priorities and planning, just as Cannon was before her.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, chair of the Cabinet operations committee, is third, following by Human Resources Minister Diane Finley, chair of the Cabinet social affairs committee, and Defence Minister Peter MacKay, chair of the Cabinet foreign affairs and defence committee.

And who would be our Laura Roslin if the Cylons attacked and the first 42 ministers in the order of priority were killed?

Sadly, no one.

The last minister on the list only contains 37 names, the last being Minister of State for Sport Bal Gosal.

Seems we’d be doomed.

Here’s a full list, as posted on the Privy Council Office website on Oct. 17.

In that event, the order of precedence with Lieutenant Governors for each Provence and Territory would take place (Order of joining confederation and population at joining to break ties). The same goes for Provincial Premiers.

But at that point, having that many heads of stated taken out by Cylons (Or Poland Air) would deem this country inoperable as one. I believe that each Lieutenant Governor and Premier would take over as local government to assist the people as best as possible. Than if all goes well form a government nationally after.

We all know we would be right screwed at the point of losing all our heads of state.
