Canadians amused by American threats to move north if their candidate loses

Thursday morning, I asked Canadian readers what they thought of a

peculiar U.S. political tradition

: Americans, often but not always Democrats, threatening to pick up and move to Canada if their candidate loses.

Readers wrote in on comments and social media. The responses were varied, but the trend seems to be that Canadians find this funny and a bit flattering. Who wouldn’t enjoy being seen as the preferable alternative to the world’s richest and most powerful country?

The rare sour notes came from Canadians who expressed impatience with Americans who give up on their own country, offense at the idea that Canadian culture was indistinct, and concern for the line at their local Tim Horton’s.

Many said they’d welcome an American immigration wave, but few expect many Americans to actually follow through. If they did, many of the Canadian respondents said, these American immigrants might find some surprises.

The 'Concern About Tim Horton's' stereotype is valid though. We line up like texas cattle to the rendering plant to scarf that overrated sugar and fat down. And/or to pay through the nose to feed our daily coffee habit.

I guess the Republicans won't care if they're generally unwelcome here just as long as Stephen Harper and the Conservatives are in power.

If there's one thing that can be said of this threat and the very very few Americans that actually go through with this threat, it's that Americans are politically very smug and don't know what a real change entails.

'If Obama wins I'm moving to Australia', Americans vent on Twitter

FORGET Canada, Australia is the new safe-haven escape for disgruntled Americans, unhappy with the impending election results.

Unhappy potential voters took to Twitter to warn their fellow countrymen that they would be shutting up shop and moving to the wonderful land of Oz should Obama win the election.

"If Obama wins im moving to Australia and becoming a kangaroo whisperer," tweeted @GriffinWilson1.

Another user, @CarsonCagle wrote: "If Obama wins I'm moving to Australia and going to Hillsong University."

@Chuck_Addis wrote that if Obama won he would be making his family move to Australia. "Not becoming a communist," he wrote. "End of story."

Aussie Twitter users took to Twitter to warn the potential ex-pats that Australia was a country that had embraced both gun control and socialised medicine after BuzzFeed compiled a list of 37 Americans who were threatening to immigrate Down Under.

"Anyone saying they're moving to Australia if Obama wins can stay right where they are," tweeted @FaintofMatts. "We are already at maximum f***wit occupancy."

"If yr moving to Australia if Obama wins: 1. We have public healthcare, schools etc -"socialism" to you. 2. We have a woman leader 3. No guns," tweeted another user @lootlou.

However, as yet nobody on Twitter has advised the pre-emptively disgruntled Americans that they could help decide the election outcome by actually voting.

My personal favourite was this gem

"I'm moving to Australia, because their president is a Christian and actually supports what he says,'' she tweeted.
