I don't get it.

This:

Just sold for $75M. Seventy five MILLION dollars!!? Wut?

I guess I'm not very refined, because I completely don't understand it. As a matter of fact, I'm quite sure I did something better in kindergarten. At least put a flower or the sun in there?

Anyhow, I'm perplexed by the whole art thing. I have friends who are artists, and I really love their work. Because they try harder.

Please help me figure this out. His other work includes this dazzling piece:

Posted Image

? He didn't even stay in the lines. -1 (million) for that.

....and....

Posted Image

Am I missing something? I really must be.

Anyhow, thought I'd share my thoughts on this.

Feel free to add to this thread with your own pieces and we can appraise and auction them off here. I'm starting the bidding on this self portrait I did at $2 billion.

Art is expression, and those first two pictures sum up CDC at the best of times.

Art and imagery is suppose to invoke emotion and a personal refection. As the saying goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Sometimes you just have to let your mind wander.

Your picture on the other hand deb, is fantastic and oddly enough someone may pay you for it!

Oh wow that's really cool! You should sell that stuff.

Also guess what. I was just thinking about painting and stuff and them I'm like "wow, that thing kinda looks like a flowerpot."

And then it hit me.

Posted Image

Cool, huh?

Will there be food involved?

EDIT: Nevermind, after seeing your example I'm sold -- where do we start?

Okay, sounds great. Be sure to get the extra cheesy kind because I won't eat anything else.

Also I've been working on another piece. I saw this:

and was like "wow, that kinda looks like a refrigerator." So then I thought "I wonder what's inside of it."

And then it hit me.

It's kinda sad because they don't have any food but I made it anyway because some people don't have very much food, too.

Close. He's dead, but he killed himself. Artist + suicide = $$$$$$

The dude's name is Rothko, and I won't pretend to like his work in the least bit, but like someone else says, one person's trash is another person's treasure. I'm sure we all like SOME piece of modern art or other. Rothko's school is some 'color field' expressionism, basically the entire thing is just using solid colours to try to tap into something else. i dunno.

I'm a big, big, big, big museum/gallery guy. If I go on vacation, I'm going to hit every single major gallery within city walls. I just love them. And as much as I hate so much modern art, I find modern art museums to be endlessly fascinating because of stuff like this. I don't always like it (rarely do), but I find it much more interesting than some rendition of an italian aristocrat or something.

You guys are the best - now that's what I'm talkin about. Love the improvements, keep 'em coming.

GJ: you're right about suicide + art = $$ but I'm blown away by the valuations. And the fact that there's an entire series of these - someone on crack could paint these. I'm with Jai on this - biggest con job ever.

Despite the reasoning behind them or why they are what they are, it's just how I feel. I don't get it (at all).

Thanks D. But I shoulda put on some lipstick I guess. And the socks aren't my actual hockey socks - they're legwarmers for my Flashdance routine.

this one was also hanging the wrong way.
it was supposed to be a side by side fridge, so i finished the painting for him, and since the right was unfinished I completed the kitchen with a cat clock and a taxidermied chipmunk holding a cowboy hat riding a taxidermied rattlesnake.

I'm glad some of you understand.

And I do get that people can admire this stuff for something deeper than what I'm seeing (or not) but i don’t understand entire collections of them. Or how they draw people in and command the $$ they do...personally, I’m bored after the first 15 seconds. Perhaps short sighted and close minded but honest feedback, that's all.

Anyhow, we’ll continue because I think we have something to contribute and are onto something here.

Another from this artist (no disrespect intended, just trying to help here) - I’m calling this one Crime Scene. Possibly OJ’s house, but missing the detail (where’s the glove?). I know, I know - that’s the point....we’re supposed to interpret this as we will and scratch deeper than the surface. The detail is whatever we make it in our minds. But I feel ripped off. Incomplete, I’m giving it $37.95 on the Shopping Network. Please, let's help this artist complete his work, as he obviously didn't have time and had to go pick up the kids from daycare.

The thing is, I enjoy going to museums and looking at art and everything as well, but I'm sorry, the $75m figure is what blows me away.

The worst part about it all is that the artist himself/herself never sees a dime nor is ever recognized for his/her work. It's always a bunch of rich stiffs with nothing better to do who attribute these ridiculous values to art after the artist has suffered some kind of tragic death.

I'm not going to judge the art itself, because that is open to each person's interpretation.
