theminister
We'll have to return the favour then, in case one of their European neighbours decide to attack them. Besides, they're currently the big guy's biggest lapdog, though Harper is trying hard to get us that title back away from them.
Wetcoaster
So no amount of public opinion nor even a referendum will change that? Has democracy also left the building?

TOMapleLaughs
A poll by Ipsos-Reid, also in June 2010, found that the majority two-in-three Canadians agree the royal family should not have any formal role in Canadian society, and reported growing sentiment that Elizabeth II should be Canada's last monarch. The majority 58% of Canadians want Canada to end ties to monarchy when Queen Elizabeth II's reign ends, and the majority 62% of Canadians believe that Canada's head of state should be the Governor General, not the Queen.[63][64]

Red Light Racicot
There are plenty of archaic royal families in Europe, seems a bit unfair to single out a particular one. I hold no grudge against them, theyre fine with me.

ronthecivil
Most polls over the years indicate that the majority of Canadians see the monarchy as obsolete and not needed, and that a referendum on keeping the monarchy around should be held. But if the question is 'does the monarchy contribute to our national identity?' or 'does the monarchy help seperate our idenity from that of the USA?', then the majority of Canadians agree with that as well. Nevertheless, Elizabeth II may very well be our last monarch. SEE ya! While the prestige of the old queen may serve as something worthy of holding on to for the sake of our colonist pride, or our difference from the US, does Prince William? Does Kate Middleton? Not really. So that'll likely be that for the monarchy for us. However, they're still around. While the royalty is useless, the brits LOVE them. Why? Well, brainwashing, of course. The royalty is like a religion. As long as they have followers, their power remains. This is partly why they have to remain in the tabloids. If apathy towards them there grew, then enough people would eventually come to realize that their royalty should be abolished, just like how the vast majority of the monarchies around the world have already been abolished. Saudi Arabia would be next on my list. If not for oil wealth and of course a ton help from their american friends, that royalty would've been deposed long ago. The question is whether or not we'd be better off.
Guest Gumballthechewy
I'd read all this but stopped after the 1st post. How about people start working hard instead of looking for handouts. The world would not be saved if wealth was distributed evenly. it would prob be worse for everyone. why would anyone invent or create or do anything if you got no reward such as wealth? Typical liberal thought process wanting everything for nothing. well not nothing you guys want someone else to work hard and then give you their money. Save Africa? LOL they don't want to save themselves, if you want to save Africa you 1st have to get rid of all the Kings and Warlords that are causing all the strife. It's not the Queen Of England's wealth that will save it.
