As per @kevin_mcgran:

NHL & NHLPA has agreed to change UFA start date to June 15th or 48 hours after Cup Final.

Here's an article: http://www.thestar.c...posal-wednesday

This will have a huge affect, as it would then be before the draft.

It would probably affect the draft as well.

Yes it was brought up previously, 2 months ago. But they were proposing to change the start date to July 10th instead. Here's the article from September 4th: http://prohockeytalk...ate-to-july-10/

I don't like this for two reasons:

1. I like the start to free agency to be one a day I don't have to work, I can follow the happenings more closely. What can be more Canadian than following hockey.

2. The time between the last playoff game and the start of the pre-season is long enough. I like to have the events in between spaced out (i.e. the draft and free agency).

This will be really tough on the teams that play in the final.

Then again, it will encourage teams to lock up their players sooner, rather than assuming they have weeks of downtime to get it done.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

If true, its a great idea. All this does is get rid of the obvious player tampering by teams trying to get an edge with pending RFAs and especially UFAs

I suspect that it might move more like other leagues where there is a window of a week or two that other teams can talk to players under expiring contracts but can't actually sign them.

The scenario where you have to make an offer on July 1st in a huge rush without ever being able to (legally) talk with that player beforehand is dumb.

Say goodbye to RFA/UFA rights...

* mainly UFA (we wouldn't have gotten the Isles 4th rounder for Ehrhoff, etc.)

I like our current system. Canada Day is perfect IMO.

Surprised they agreed on anything at all. I don't like this though. It was good the way it was. No need to change it.

Actually, I think it will encourage MORE draft day trades.

How many teams refrain from making a trade on draft day, hoping that they can address their problems through free agency, only to strike out and end up with nothing? At that point, many of them end up overpaying for one of the lower quality guys because there is nothing better left.

For instance, would Canucks be more likely to make a trade at the 2011 draft if they already knew that the only powerforward free agent they were able to sign was Marco Sturm? Possibly.

That was one of the arguments floating in my head too.

If this was in place a while ago I would say we might not have Ballard.

Agreed. Getting Hamhuis was far from a sure thing, and Gillis NEEDED at least one top-4 defenseman.

Also this year. Gillis landed Garrison, but with the rumors about how hard he was also going after Weber and Schultz lead me to believe he would have liked to land 2 guys. This would probably free him up to make a trade to dump Ballard. And, of course, the best time to do that would probably have been at the draft.

I imagine the Detroit Red Wings would have been an active player at the draft had they known they were going to completely strike out in free agency.
