Lets imagine this fantasy scenario.

We lose the entire 2012-2013 season to the lockout.

Summer 2013 the NHL announce a new team (Hopefully Quebec) will join the NHL and there will be an expansion draft.

You have the choice between protecting:

1 goalie + 5 defensemen + 9 forwards

or

2 goalies + 3 defensemen + 7 fowards

Who would you protect?

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

I'll go 1 Goalie, 5 D-men, 9 Forwards:

Schneider

Hamhuis, Edler, Bieksa, Tanev, Garrison

Sedin, Sedin, Burrows, Kesler, Booth, Kassian, Higgins, Hansen, Lappierre

Let's say they changed the rules and every team could protect 3 goaltenders and 20 skaters, but every player with a contract or bonafide offer was eligible. Who would you protect?

If it's like last expansion draft players with under 50 NHL games are auto exempt. Kassian and Lack do not need to be protected.

MG would have traded Luongo by the time because only way expansion draft happens is if there is a new CBA signed. Assuming his return would be prospect, pick and top 9 forward. No need to protect prospect.

Sedin Sedin Burrows
Booth Kesler Hansen
Raymond Malhotra Higgins
Weise Lappy Kassian
John Doe (Luongo trade)
Volpatti
Ebbe

Bieksa Hamhuis
Edler Garrison
Ballard Tanev
Alberts

Schneider
Lack

Edler, Alberts,Higgins, Manny, Lappy, Raymond, Ebbett, Volpati all UFA at end of this season but I'm assuming most or all will be re-signed.

Just take a look at the players Minnesota and Columbus got to choose from.

I would not be worried about an expansion draft.

Ouch...If Columbus and Minnesota didn't draft Nash and Gaborik it would've been a miracle if they got 10 wins in their first years.

This is not even a choice for Vancouver. We have no second goalie to protect! None of the fans are thinking both Luongo and Schneider.

I'm assuming there is a certain threshold for prospects in terms of games played where they are automatically protected?

Using only roster players and 1 + 5 + 9 system:

Schneider
Hamhuis, Bieksa, Edler, Garrison, Tanev
H. Sedin, D. Sedin, Kesler, Burrows, Booth, Hansen, Higgins, Lapierre, Kassian (If he counts? Or Malhotra)
