AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- A Dutch man who was beaten and kicked by several football players after working as a linesman during a youth match died Monday.

Richard Nieuwenhuizen collapsed and was rushed to the hospital hours after players from Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten punched and kicked him. Nieuwenhuizen's club, Buitenboys, said the 41-year-old linesman died Monday evening but did not announce the exact cause of death.

Three players, whose ages range from 15 to 16, were arrested earlier Monday for alleged involvement in the beating on Sunday in the town of Almere.

Dutch Sports Minister Edith Schippers told national broadcaster NOS even before the news of Nieuwenhuizen's death that "it is absolutely terrible that something like this can happen on a Dutch sports field."

Police spokeswoman Leonie Bosselaar said shortly before the linesman's death was announced that the players were still in custody and investigations were continuing. She added that police would not rule out arresting more suspects.

Nieuw Sloten said in a statement on its website it has banned the players involved and pulled their team out of the league.

The statement said such incidents "do not belong on a football field."

Both clubs cancelled all training scheduled for Monday.

If you attack someone and they die of a heart attack, is that still murder?

I've always wondered that. I'm guessing it's not, because nobody could reasonably expect for someone to know if someone had heart problems.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome is.

Reminds me of the main reason I got tired of reffing, kids take it wayyyyyyyyyyyy too seriously, as if they're professionals... Never mind the parents who live vicariously through their 'success' and lose it when their precious little superstars don't have things go their way.

I used to umpire tee ball when I was 12-14 ... Worst ... job ... ever ...

No ... wait ... when they put me on girls' softball, that was even worse. I don't even remember how many times I was yelled at, sweared at, told to kill myself, etc. by 40-something-year-old men and women ...

There are two things I cannot stand in this world:

People who beat up innocent soccer officials after they presumably make a bad call...

... and the Dutch.

imo If you want to be a ref in any league, i think it helps if you're juiced up so you look like you'll crush the skulls of all who disagree with your calls.

I was reffing idiot-league floor hockey years ago. Two man ref system. Me and an ape. Needless to say, the ape never made a bad call.

I'm pretty sure it is, 2nd degree.

Maybe it is manslaughter as Hudson Bay suggests.

Yes...I coached my girls in Ringette for over 10 years...

I was physically threatened by one parent in the middle of a meeting - he kept coming to the bench and "coach" his daughter - coach me, tell me who I should put where, etc...I told him to never come near the bench again as he was disrupting the team In the meeting after that game, he whispered in my ear - "you ever tell me off like that again in front of my kid and I'll kill you".

I've had parents from the other team yell at me, yell at my players, throw things at us. I've seen parents fighting in the stands.
This is Ringette - not hockey! I heard a lot of tales of minor hockey issues in Calgary for a lot of the people involved in Ringette also had boys (and girls) in hockey.

Now I wasn't a angel myself, early in my coaching I did my fair share of complaining to the refs...part of me wishes I kept it up - but in my last few seasons, I didn't let the ref get to me - told my players that they are human and sometimes make mistakes just like us. In the last game I coached, it was Provincials and in our 3 game of the round robin, if we won we would have advanced, but instead of a senior ref and a junior ref at our game, we got 2 junior's...and one of them was the sister of one of the girls on the team we were playing. It just so happened that we were tied with them at that point...well...my team got all the penalties in that game, and 2 goals disallowed - we lost by a score of 5-4. I didn't lose my cool the whole game. Parents were going nuts...some players on my team were ticked off - yelling at the ref, yelling at me to do something...well..I just said keep your cool...we can persevere...so after the game, we shook hands with the other team and coaches...the coach on the other team apologized to me - said there's no way they should have won - he knew it was given to them...so when I went to shake the hand of the ref, I said to her something like "that was the worst and most one sided reffed game I've seen in over 10 years. Congrats, that team will get destroyed by Calgary NW - unless of course you ref that one as well". Well...I got suspended for that, wasn't allowed to coach the final game (which didn't affect the standings anyways). I was right of course, NW Calgary beat them in the 1/4 finals 12-1. The NW Calgary team, was a team that we had played 10 times that year, every game was close, with us on top 6 wins to 4. I'm not saying we would have beat them in the 1/4 finals - but we had a better chance.

That said, I'm not proud of what I said to her...wrote her an apology (through the associations)..

Ringette Alberta also suspended me 1 game. A game I still owe them as that was the last year I coached.

Yes...people lose it - but no excuse to hurt someone, let alone cause someone to die...

Charge them the same, no ordinary citizens/teens/kids should be going around attacking each other in the first place.

On topic, I can't stand seeing some of the abuse that referees get even in "professional" leagues.

The thin skull rule applies here; take your victim as you find him. Even if the players had no knowledge of any heart related conditions that could result in much more damage to their victim than they had intended, they are still liable.
