The Dwarves in the book were always entertaining, and had a sense of nobility about them. The few scenes they've shown they look like comic relief. Then again it's hard to compare other actors to John Rhys-Davies.

What I don't like is they are doing too much foreshadowing to the Lord of the Rings. It sort of changes the tone of the story.

But we'll see.

Part of me wishes they made The Hobbit before LOTR.

But that wouldn't have garnered as much attention as making LOTR first. (plus I don't think any studio would've given Peter Jackson the green light to make 'The Hobbit' without LOTR - as he had enough trouble getting New Line Cinema to finance LOTR)

Actually no. What can I say, I picked a good one. That's why it's going on 18 years, I suppose... ;)

Orland Kurtenbach and Dennis Kearns had just been torched 8-1 by the Habs, but they still took time to come out to meet us, some fellow BC boys who were playing hockey in Montreal. THAT"S what being a Canuck is!

As for The Hobbit, I've been going back and forth on my "excitement meter." Definitely not as excited as I was for LOTR, but I think it's a bit unfair to compare The Hobbit to that. Different tone entirely and honestly cannot see that many people at all enjoying it more than LOTR.

That said, I still think it's going to be worth seeing, better than majority of any other films released this last year, and will certainly be more memorable in 10 years time than anything else released. Meaning, there will still be people rewatching The Hobbit in 10 years than there will be people rewatching Skyfall, Argo, Lincoln, etc. All good movies, just won't hold with the wider audience that The Hobbit can.

It won't be worth it to go to the theatre right after release, two hours early and waiting in line by yourself. Maybe after a couple weeks once the hardcore hobbits have all gone already lol.

If you like looking at statistics to determine who's better, you're just a casual fan.

2.41 season GAA isn't very impressive. Let's not get into playoffs and his SV%.

Cory Schneider is the next Patrick Roy.

I don't get very pumped up for movies (I haven't even been to the theatre since about January) but this is definitely one I will go see on opening day. I'm re-reading the book right now, should make a great movie.

Wife and I already reserved tickets and seats for Dec 16th showing. VIP theatre in Winnipeg that has Ultra whatever screen/sound and reserved seating. Only adults as they serve alcohol as well. No lines at all.

So for those who have read the book, there is a part at the end of the novel that says that gandalf and other wizards joined together to chase the necromancer (Sauron) out of Mirkwood. That is all what was said about it. Do you think Jackson will input that into the trilogy? It could be a fantastic addition.

P.S. Didn't think that gave anything away for those who haven't read the book

I'm pretty sure it's in the movie. Not sure which part it will be in tho.

Love it.

One review suggesting mediocrity so far. The trilogy was so well done (I thought) that this movie would have to be excellent to impress; riding along in the shadows of the previous films would not do.

I thought it was pretty decent, still better than pretty much everything I've watched this year except Cloudatlas.

It was pretty good, I still think they shoulda stuck the book into one full movie, making it into a trilogy is just milking the fat money but what the hell, most of us will see all 3 parts of the Hobbit no doubt.

'pretty decent' pretty much sums it up for me. good, but absolutely disappointing in that 'good' is not good enough after the trilogy.

the things i thought i wouldnt like about the movie (judging from early reviews and trailers) i actually didn't have any issue with. but i had some big issues with other aspects

thought bilbo's casting was perfect.

still have hopes for the new trilogy, but it was a weak start imo

Terrific movie, really matched the mood of the novel. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were written far differently.

It was good but my expectations weren't exactly met. I knew that was going to happen after re-watching the LOTR trilogy and finding either diminishing returns or nostalgia had enhanced them in my head.

My expectations were high but the movie was just good. Freeman was fracking great though...Something felt off to me about Mckellen though. Not bad just off.

Wife and I saw it in IMAX 3D last night, as far as visuals and sound are concerned, it was awesome. The stone giants game/fight was stunning on screen as well.

What was weird to me was the extensively long Star Trek preview which felt like 10-15 minutes long.

did you read the book before?

I have not read LOTR still. I didnt like the movie much when FOTR came out since I didnt know the story. But after watching all 3, I became a huge fan, and have watched the trilogy esp the extended edition so many times.

did anyone find jackson's camera work to be just tedious?

the way we'd see the hobbits (or whatever) walking along a cliffside, and the camera pulls back, and off to the side?

yes, jackson, we get it, the world is majestic and we have a nice scaled model

there was literally that same shot / camera 'technique' done about 35 times in the movie. that weird angled pull back.

UGH
