U.N. chief to meet South Korean pop star, Austrian skydiver

UNITED NATIONS | Tue Oct 23, 2012 7:14pm EDT

(Reuters) - It's not all war and peace at the United Nations. U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon added pop music and supersonic skydiving to his agenda on Tuesday by scheduling meetings with "Gangnam Style" South Korean singer Psy and Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner.

Ban's spokesman, Martin Nesirky, told reporters that while the secretary-general deals with weighty issues such as the conflict in Syria and crises in Mali and the Sahel region, he also believed it was important to engage other parts of society.

"For example, those who have been enthused by the scientific aspects of Felix Baumgartner's leap from the edge of space, and in the case of Psy ... he firmly believes music has great power, particularly in helping to overcome intolerance," he said.

I was sick of 'gang-nam style' by the third time I heard it. Hope I never have to listen to it again.

I just came back from 9 weeks holidays in Thailand and Cambodia. I must've heard it at least a hundred times there as all the bars and clubs were playin' it.

Psy's been known for his controversial songs anyways. He has run into a lot of problems with Korean censorship in the past.

It sucks how people dislike Psy because of his terrible song and how it's been presented and overplayed. I hope people realize that "Gangnam Style" is the type of music that is widely accepted in Korea. The music industry in Korea is completely different; it's foundation is based on "trend-following." Unfortunate yes, but that's how it is, and has been for the last 15 years.

He was supposed to perform during halftime at the Seahawks/Bills game next week. This news couldn't have come at a better time.
