KoreanHockeyFan
i'm not stopping them. the entire "local news" industry revolves around this kind of garbage. people ENJOY examining this type of tragedy from a safe distance you're right, it doesn't help, and it doesn't hurt. it's completely... meaningless for almost every single person who reads it, except those directly local to the event

GLASSJAW
No, I read it because it is a news article. I read it because I want to know whats going on in my city, country and the world. That is the whole point of news, to know what the hell is going on around you when you are too busy working or sitting at home. PS. If you get entertained from these type of news stories, why not just watch a horror movie?
Dion Phaneuf
If they did, it would be underwater. The Vancouver Sun is a joke when is comes to actual journalism.
Pouria
GLASSJAW has a point here. Tragedies and other violent stories are what local news are usually centered around. It's sort of like "misery-porn." We may not be completely aware of it, but as regular human beings, we enjoy, or are interested more in stories that involve other people's miseries. We're automatically drawn to titles headlines "Shooting at..." or "Massacre in..." etc. Be honest, what pops out more? The headlines above, or something like "Bill C-[imaginary number] passes Parliament."
KoreanHockeyFan
Well, if it is based on how relevant it should be to you then News would only be about Canadian elections and government's decisions that impact the general public. I mean why would we care about war on Iraq, the conflict in Palestine, Japan Tsunami, hurricane Katrina or breast cancer research? right? News is supposed to inform us of current events whether a major or a minor event.
