Puck went off Matheson, but really liked Kassian on the PK - he's really aggressive, makes good reads. They should try him there more often --- but of course, in Arniels world that would make too much sense.

100% Connauton. This kid does not know how to play defense.

Youch, Connauton has got to figure out the defensive side of the game. Until then, he needs to be paired w/ Tanev so he can babysit him.

i was just reading through peter andersson's talk thread and i had totally forgotten he played in the WJC. i don't think he was mentioned the other day in the world juniors thread. a lot of people complaining about not having guys in the tourney overlooked him.

Tanev +2
Connauton -2

Tale of 2 very different d-men who really should be at similar development stages, unfortunately Tanev is miles ahead. Connauton has been on a slide last few weeks, also coincides with being paired with Joslin. No coincidence. Playing on his offside doesn't help. That pairing is a certified disaster, has been since day 1.

Although Kass hasn't been putting up pts, you can tell he's working on his defensive game. He's not flying the zone early, he's backchecking more often etc etc. He looked really good on the PK. Also didn't run around taking stupid penalties. The pts will come.

Andersson back from injury looked like he never left. Good positional d-man.
Ebbett just makes me shake my head on most nights.
Archie bunker had a pretty good night as well.

I respect that Kass is learning how to play defense, but not every player is expected to perform at a high defensive level. Kass uses a lot of his energy in the offensive zone crashing the boards and fighting for the puck in the corners. How do u expect him to come rifling back for the back check every single time to break up a play succesfully? I don't think anyone else on the team works as hard as he does in the corners (especially his line mates). He has a lot of offensive skill. The Sedins aren't the best defensive players, but they have Burrows to cover their buts most of the time. I think Kassian does have to learn the defensive game yes, but we should have him paired up with another player that can cover up for him once in a while too as well as feed him the puck. Can anyone say Shroeder?

He has to get more prophicient defensively.  It won't be to the point of an elite two way guy, but put heavy focus on the backcheck and covering for awhile so he can add a bit more defense to his game.  Once that kind of stuff becomes a bit more second nature i totally agree put him with schroeder.  they could be tough to score on and tough to defend.  His offense is good, we know that.  Once he can actually stop the odd goal against, this little point drought won't even be an after thought.edit: in response to your first sentence, i doubt we'll consider his defnse to be at a high level at any point, but he needs to come out of the "somewhat below average" category IMO.

I didn't watch but Schroeder looked alright from these few clips, Andersson's goal was pretty good, and Archie had a good tough game.

Edit: Finally got it to show the video and not just the link :P

Bill Sweatt was flying out there. K-Conn has so much offensive ability, but still lost in the defensive zone. Archibald with a great game!!!
I liked Andersson's shot on the goal. Great game boys!

Said this in the Archibald thread and I'll say it again, we should run a line of:
Archibald - Schroeder - Kassian
I think they'd do alright

This. It's so obvious, that I can see why Arniel won't be doing this.

I've seen the idea of converting him to forward being brought up before. He did play forward in the past, before he was drafted.

If he can't translate his offensive game to the NHL it might be the next best thing for him as he's probably not going to make it as a good defensive D-man.

It makes sense if you think about it. He has the size, grit, shot and skating to be an effective two-way player up front, and having played defense in the past he'd already have an advantage. Plus he'd still be useful defending as wingers have it easier.

Time will tell if Archibald's form is a hot streak or an arrival of a dominant power forward. I'm inclined to think former at this stage as he still seems a bit raw, but this run will be great for his confidence and development. I'm excited to see if Canucks' gamble on Archibald will pay off. But after all the power forwards that have come and gone through the canucks' organization, I thought I would dampen fan's expectations just a little.

Kassian looks inconsistent as is Schroeder. Two players who have shown flashes of greatness and potential, but has yet to be dominant - not as advertised, at least not yet.

Connauton still seems to be at least a year off from the NHL if he ever solves his defensive game. Joslin being Joslin doesn't help either. Why did we sign Joslin again? and Why did we let go Gragnani? I mean, it's not like Grags was a defensive stalwart but I liked what I saw from him last year after the trade deadline. He seemed more ready at least than Connauton offensively and defensively. But what do I know, i'm no scout. But it just doesen't make sense that we trade Hodgson and Sulzer for Kassian and Gragnani and then let one good piece go for nothing and then sign a plug like Joslin.

Tanev seems like the only NHL ready player in that game.

Sweatt has been great, but i think we've also seen at his best already. With not much room for development, what will his career projectory be? Will it be Hansen-like or Ebbett-like or Raymond-like?

Not sure what Arniel's plan is for this team. Is he still trying to figure the team out? Is he getting some input from the Canucks? I ask because some of his coaching decisions have been.... strange.

I think Connauton doesn't know what to do in the defensive zone when joslin is stinking it up so bad. Nauts doesn't have the defensive prowess to cover for his partner AND himself, and that's what he's trying to do, because he doesn't trust Joslin (and rightfully so). he'll never be able to do that, as that isn't his game. he can hold his own, as he proved earlier in the year, but when he suddenly has to do his job AND his partners job, he falls apart. he has to be paired with a stay at home guy like sauve or tanev, not a "what the hell is he trying to do" guy like Joslin.
