Canada and the rest of the Western world have largely patterned themselves to varying degree after the U.S. model.

Competing models would be that of the Soviet Union, National Socialist Germany, The Empire of Japan, China, modern Russia, various religeous and tribal societies, etc.

They are a "movement" in the USA ONLY because the country is too regressive to allow for such "rights" under normal conditions without a change to the Constitution .. most progressive countries are light years ahead on these issues ..

America is just "exceptional" .. in fact, "American Exceptionalism" is THE oxymoron of our time .. and they just keep re-arraigning the deck chairs .. the American Dream has become a nightmare for far too many people to not be worthy of mockery ..

Is that why we have gay rights and rights for abortion? Its because we were following the US model? Really?

Fact of the matter is that we are a bit different than our neighbors down south on many aspects including multiculturalism. We are a cultural mosaic while America is a melting pot. We have differences when it comes to the equal rights and freedom for everyone. We tolerate other cultures and religions and celebrate it much more than our American counterpart.

What melting pot? That may have been true 50 years in the US but they are becoming just as multi-cultural as us. The Latinos are growing in population, they have their own TV network, their own culture. In some States like California have bi-lingual programs were everything is translated into two or more languages. Some neighbourhoods have entire Hispanic people who only speak Spanish.

The US have defacto Multi-culturalism.

LOL care to explain the difference between a "cultural mosaic" and a "melting pot"? And on top of that, maybe outline what makes a "cultural mosaic" BETTER than a "melting pot"? Euphemisms that mean exactly the same thing do not carry any more weight than any other. You've got your problems with government too, my friend, so I think you may want to climb down out of that ivory tower. You next going to tell me that Canada is a utopian society that doesn't contain people that are intolerant of other people's cultures or beliefs? Moses smell the roses.

Ok...I was saying that the euphemisms themselves mean exactly the same thing...not that there was no difference in the cultural diversity or at least the adapting of it between our countries...but if you would, please elaborate on what makes yours a "cultural mosaic" if you would be so kind...are you going to tell me there isn't intolerance in your society?

As far as your jibe about "speaking english, loving guns" There are quite a few larger cities in this country that put up their community signs and the like in English and Spanish, so I would have to disagree with that part. It is true that there are certain groups that want to require immigrants to pass an ESL course before they are allowed to be citizens. I don't think it should be a requirement, but there are those who think that way. "Loving guns" was just a stereotype that made me chuckle. Not all Americans are crazy about guns.

No, why would I ever say that? What a truly bizarre notion. Stop getting your back up.

They don't mean the same thing for the reasons I outlined. In American you are expected to become American, adopt English, the culture, etc. In Canada you are to a degree, but you're not expected to become 'Canadian' because there really isn't such a thing relative to being American.

I could go into much greater detail, but I'm sure you are capable of using the internet.

You can debate terminology all day, but by the end of the day the fact remains that the present day U.S. contains many more cultural and ethnic groups than Canada does and is argueably more inclusive.

Anybody who says otherwise must have just stepped out of a time machine or knows nothing of Canada outside of the GTA.
