the whole album is great imo.

and speaking of which, so many potentially great albums about to come out.

that Merchandise album is finally coming out. their debut EP was decent, but their new single is absolutely phenomenal and will be in my top 5 of the year, no question.

also, within the next month or so:
the knife
kurt vile
deerhunter
iron and wine
yeah yeah yeahs (not a fan, myself)
thee oh sees
phoenix
young galaxy
guided by voices
akron/family
justice
biblio

plus some potentially interesting re-issues from four tet, the microphones, REM, the stooges, morrissey, the postal service, the breeders, half japanese.

should be a really interesting month or two.

Picked up that ep on a whim, after you posted that video a couple months back. Vaguely liked it, forgot about it, then threw it on on a boat last week with a group of friends ... totally changed the vibe, had people coming up asking what it was, absolutely perfect for the waves and the sun. I'm now looking forward to this album.

so the new Kurt Vile, IMO, may be his best album to date, and i LOVE the dude. it definitely doesn't have his best singles on it, but the songs sometimes trail on for 7, 8, 10 minutes and i just love that. really great record.

speaking of long songs... I'm in the middle of Shaking the Habitual from The Knife, and it's probably the weirdest thing I've heard in a very long time. It's both scary and awesome. But tracks like Full of Fire are such a jam. The album doesn't have the immediate "catchy" aspects of Silent Shout, but it's still loaded with weird little hooks.

Haven't bought a new album in an awful long time. However, I'm getting really excited for Daft Punk's new material in May.

yeah, the new Kurt Vile is truly good after one listen. remember liking the second song quite a bit.

gave the new James Blake a once-over, way more accessible than s/t, some great stuff on there and some weird stuff like a few hip-hop verses.

new Wavves was listenable and kinda interesting, but overall pretty mediocre. and i really liked some of King of the Beach.

oh, and i know most of the regulars here hate odd future but tyler, earl and domo were on Letterman last night and actually gave (i thought) a really good performance. and Tyler's new album, though it still has tons of the usual annoying stupidity, has some interesting jazz bits and some really pleasant songs. Answer, Jamba, and Rusty are all quite good.

Does anyone know if Mumford & Sons is sold out? I tried buying tickets on Friday but it said none were available on Ticketmaster.com.

“Unbelief is as much of a choice as belief is. What makes it in many ways more appealing is that whereas to believe in something requires some measure of understanding and effort, not to believe doesn't require much of anything at all.” - Frederick Buechner

“All human nature vigorously resists grace because grace changes us and the change is painful.” - Flannery O'Connor

“My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?” - C.S. Lewis

Tyga's Hotel California came out yesterday, pretty solid album.
My favorites include,
MOE
Molly Ft. Wiz Khalifa(Was released as a single)
500 Degrees Ft. Lil Wayne
and Drive Fast, Live young.
A solid party album, with tonnes of bass. Tyga's producers are hands down the sickest in the game. And 3-4 of the songs are pretty serious, so its a solid mix that any general hiphop fan would appreciate.

Simon Collins, son of Phil, has formed a band called "Sound of Contact"; they will be debuting their first album this May. Collins spent much of his time working on the album in his hometown of Vancouver, though he has since relocated to England. It'll supposedly be a concept album mixing influences from "classic rock," progressive rock, space rock, and other alternative genres.

Posted Image

Here's an excerpt from their official website bio:

http://www.soundofcontact.com/bio/

An incredible amount of spontaneous energy and live studio performance has been captured on the album with a powerful interplay between keyboards, guitar and drums that is reminscent of progressive rock of the ’70s like Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd yet it has a modern musical quality akin to popular classic rock-influenced alt rock bands of today such as Coldplay, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Porcupine Tree and Muse.

Interestingly, Simon's voice sounds a bit like his father's, so it would be neat to listen to it with that in mind. If I were to compare their voices, Simon's is thinner and less powerful, sounding the way his father's does now rather than when Phil was in his prime. His band members have worked with Steve Hackett more than a few times before, and Simon has incorporated homages in his previous albums to early Genesis tracks. This tells me they are highly-influenced by the Gabriel-era, so we'll see what happens. It could either be a major disappointment or a success.

Their album is titled "Dimensionaut" and will be released in May 2013. The album was produced by Nick Davis, who also was responsible for mixing Genesis' and Mike and the Mechanics' post-1990 albums. Today, they released excerpts from the album:

Been watching the Coachella stream all weekend, and man, Vampire Weekend absolutely killed it. Their version of their new song, Step, had that deep vocal effect throughout, and it sounded great. Wish it was used more in studio version

the only livestream shows i watched were VW and Tame Impala.

Tame Impala were good and entertaining, but very flawed. Vampire Weekend were nearly flawless, the new songs sound terrific and I've ever heard Ezra sing that well.
