Well, it depends really. I have over 9000 songs on my ipod, obviously don't listen to them all. It's cliche, I know, but the bands I go back to the most are The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Queen, The Kinks, and Elvis. Mixed in with that would be AC/DC, Beastie Boys, Beck, Daft Punk, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, and Blur. Of the "current" bands since 2000, the only bands I can think of that I listen to on a regular basis would be The White Stripes (yes tail end of the 90s), Panda Bear, The Shins, and Graham Coxon.EDIT: Forgot Tom Waits.

On second look, maybe your post isn't so...Wait a minute!

For a classic-rock-listening old fart, you're quite the name-dropping ninja.

The Postal Service has updated their website, I hope this means new music.

Really looking forward to hearing the new Biffy Clyro album when it finally comes out.

Man, the album from Everything Everything is pretty good. Lots of hidden little melodies everywhere. The good but unremarkable p4k review (7.6) doesn't seem like it does it justice.

Sounds like Bloc Party meets TV on the Radio

Solid album. Something in the Manchester water to keep producing all these good bands. Maybe it's soot.

Great song, GLASSJAW. I detect some 80's era Peter Gabriel in there. Sounds familiar, but fresh.

a bunch of japanese artists covered songs from Loveless and it's called Yellow Loveless. some of it is really cool, the version of When You Sleep is awesome and silly.

Please accept this as only a half-hearted endorsement of how fricken cute Kitty (Pryde) is and how unreasonably catchy this track is.

I like that new Everything Everything song, didn't even know they'd done a new album so I'll probably check it out. My Kz Ur Bf is probably my favourite song by them.

Just finished Arc, so goooood. Thanks for posting that up, my favourite is Don't Try.

2013 already wins as I didn't really like anything new that I listened to last year, admittedly I didn't really actively look but nothing really stood out for me.

I mostly can't wait for Arcade Fire this year, pretty sure they won't let me down.

I don't have much use for Death Cab, and haven't bothered with that new Ben Gibbard solo album...but I always had a soft spot for Postal Service.

Haven't heard - is a new album coming?

That's what I'm like, never bothered with the other stuff but loved The Postal Service. Just looked on their website again it's been updated to show a re-issue of Give Up (with 2 new tracks), an appearance at the show gJ mentioned and "more to come". I hope they do make a new album, but it's been forever and it might end up crap like No Doubt was last year.

edit - just looked on twitter and there's a tweet that reads:

@jimmytamborello and I are very excited to (hopefully) be playing in a town near you very soon. One time offer, while supplies last. #giveup

Maybe it'll be like Refused, touring around again.

what's the diff between Ben Gibbard solo and Death Cab? I thought Death Cab was just a vehicle (ha ha, get it?) for his own songwriting anyway?

I'm not a fan of any of his work to any extreme length, but I remember thinking Transatlanticism was a pretty solid record! A few good songs on there, none of which live up to the standards set by the album's phenomenal art work, unfortunately.

I actually am not on board with the Death Cab hate. Early lo-fi DC had a lot of neat, quirky, enjoyable songs, and I personally think that The Photo Album - Transatlanticism - Plans was as good a 1-2-3 punch as any band has done in the last little while. Ben has just gotten soft. It may be a vehicle for his songs, but Chris Walla was always the genius who sanded off the edges. Although, Chris Walla's solo album was also unbelievably poor.

Anyways, DCFC relies on pretty standard arrangements and self-deprication. That can only go so far, and Ben moving down from a full band to basically just him on a guitar means that every song lacks a little creativity. Like I said, I like Ben Gibbard on the whole, but he knows how to write one kind of song and that's it.

Ben Gibbard as a person, I would kind of like to smack, yeah. But John Phillips raped and impregnated his daughter, and still wrote one of my favorite albums of all time, so Ben's sissy emo bs is easily tolerable as long as he write's good songs. Which he isn't, anymore.

Apparently Mars Volta are officially broken up over Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's new project Bosnian Rainbows.
http://www.torontosu...ta-splitting-up

The good news? Bosnian Rainbows just released their first track, and it's .... really good. Kind of like a cross between Rush and The Police, but a bit weirder:

Like BRMC's cover of The Call's "Let The Day Begin". A fitting tribute to Michael Been, who helped them out behind the scenes and who was the bassist's father until he passed away in August 2010.

That song is good, Bookie, which is surprising for me because the Mars Volta is one of my least favourite bands, pretty much ever. And I made an effort to like them, as I was huge on At The Drive-In, back in the day.

Diggin that Foxygen song.

I am a BRMC fan, and that cover wasn't bad on first listen - didn't stand out much though.

Death Cab has some half-decent songs, but this is the only song of theirs I absolutely loooove:

There's a ton of Death Cab songs I really love (also, interestingly enough, wasn't too high on The Postal Service. But it has enough promise that I'd be interested in another) but for some reason, I really, really loved this single. Maybe it's because it's optimistic and cheery, maybe because it was on a bad album. I don't know.
