Saw that after I posted mine. Seems like a really good deal. Never owned a Toshiba TV though, but all the reviews seem really good.

According to my order they estimate I should see it anwhere from the 27th to the 2nd. I'm not holding my breath however. Ordered a Sharp Aquos last year from Future Shop and I didn't see it for 2 1/2 weeks.

I love my Toshiba TV. I have friends who have had Sony and Samsung and LG all crap out or have problems over the years. My Toshiba is about 5 (I think) years old now and still going strong like the day my dad bought it.

My favorite is diamond willow walking staffs. I talk to whomever I'm carving for so that I can carve it to their personality. Ex. faces, animals ,chinese characters, and runes are very popular. It's more of a personal thing for me than a money maker. Love doing wood spirits, and native line carving. This summer I'm gonna run amok carving spirit faces in campground stumps for free camping. :)

Thats awesome. I tried to carve once, realized I suck at it (no artistic skills whatsoever) so I just stuck to making nice desks, tables, chairs, etc. and decided to go back to making stuff like wooden piggy banks, etc. as hobby and stuff to burn off time.

I will be hitting up Future Shop today at 6:30, maybe look at a 55 inch TV to watch sports on, yikes, what will that be like, but have a hard time deciding on what to get, LCD, LED or Plasma. I hear Plasma TVs are very comparable to LCDs now not like before when there was no comparison. LED would be the way to go but they are too pricey, but still they do not consume as much energy as the other two so..........

I find it interesting that your friends have had problems with Samsungs, they're typically make the best quality TVs out of all the brands you've listed here. I've had a 40" Samsung LCD for a year and a half now and it has been great. I bought it after trying out 3 different LG's that had horrible backlighting issues that really showed up when I watched hockey in HD. Streaks all over the screen!

Anyway, not shopping on Boxing Day - it's not worth the chaos. But then, I'm also not an electronics guy. I refuse to buy a smartphone (all I do is talk and text) and I am not interested in most of the gadgets that people buy these days. I'd rather stay home and rest on Boxing Day.

I will be hitting up Future Shop today at 6:30, maybe look at a 55 inch TV to watch sports on, yikes, what will that be like, but have a hard time deciding on what to get, LCD, LED or Plasma. If you have the money, 240hz LED would be the way to go. Plasmas are great for sports (they have a really high refresh rate) but don't look good in bright rooms. LCD's are good as well, I went with a 40" Samsung, it's 1080p and 120hz. Looks great. Only downside is that LCD's typically don't do 'deep' blacks as well as Plasmas.

Biology trumps need in bargain hunt

Date December 26, 2012 - 4:53PM Amy Remeikis

Feeling a compulsion to spend money even though there is nothing you really need?
Don’t worry, it’s just biology. The Australian Retailers Association predicts $14.8 billion will be spent in the coming weeks, helped along by human nature and the fear that if you’re not in the shops, you’re missing out.
“As human beings, you assume that if lots of people want something, then we need to be part of it – it is the scarcity effect basically,” Dr Paul Harrison, a senior lecturer in consumer behaviour and advertising at the Deakin Graduate School of Business, said.
“If lots of people want it, it has more value. If we are looking around and everyone is grabbing for towels, even if we don’t need them, we feel that if we miss out which the whole scarcity thing is; we’ll miss out on something important.

“That is part of what makes us human – we are really responding to animal instincts at sale time and research has actually shown that a different form of thinking goes on in our brain when we see words like 'sale' or 'free'.
We actually over ride the rational part of our brain with the emotional part of our brain, so it is a chemical process as much as anything else.”
That psychological response, Dr Harrison said, was helped along by marketing messages.
“In a positive light, I would say that people tend to respond well to marketing messages, but in a negative light, you could probably argue that people have a tendency to look at what other people are doing and what messages are being broadcast to help us to make decisions; so if we are constantly being told that these sales are amazing and lots of people are going to go there, then there’s a degree of behaviour which suggests ‘maybe if I don’t go, I’ll miss out’.
“One of the really interesting things is the way retailers are saying it is not going to be a great year, it is only a growth of three to four percent, but in reality, that kind of growth is pretty good, we just got used to unreasonable amounts of growth from the early '90s until recently, particularly for retailers.
“So we have been trained to consume in a way, and post-Christmas sales is just another opportunity to consume. It has a little more hype, we tend to give it a lot more emphasis, but in reality, and everyone knows this, there aren't that many bargains to be had and there are sales all year long now.
“It is not just the mid-year sales and the Christmas sales, so if you are thinking about it, we have been trained to respond to some degree all through the year, we just respond even more at Christmas.”
Cortney Thomson, an account director at Cole Lawson Communications who specialises in campaign and strategy management, said the biggest challenge approaching retailers was meeting the expectations of ”smarter shoppers”.
“We have shoppers that have access to more products, many different outlets in different countries,” Ms Thomson said.
“They are able to find the best price, the best type of products for what they are looking for and I think more and more shoppers are getting a little more ballsy in terms of asking for discounts and mark downs and that sort of thing. I definitely think we are seeing a smarter shopper these days.”
But if you do find yourself reaching for enough beach towels to keep the Australian swim team dry or returning home with more fitted sheets than you have beds, Dr Harrison said the smart way to prepare for the post-Christmas sales is just to take a breath.
And write a list.
“About what you actually need, not what you want, but what you need. And then you can decide whether you actually make any savings,” he said.
“A lot of people quite like the frantic social nature of it and if that is really what you want to do, then that is fine for you and people like you.
“But if it’s not, then don’t expect huge bargains and don’t expect to have a good time.”

Boxing Day shopper calls 9-1-1 over packed Burnaby mall parking lot

Burnaby RCMP is asking frustrated shoppers snarled up in Boxing Day traffic not to call 911.

Staff-Sgt. Steve Crawford said the detachment has received at least one phone call from a fed-up driver who dialed 911 to enlist the Mounties help in getting her out of a crowded Burnaby mall parking lot.

“She was concerned it was taking her an hour to get out of the parking lot,” said Crawford. “She was trying to get us to assist her to get out.”

Police had to tell the woman she was on her own on this one.

“We explained to her there is not much we can do for her,” said Crawford. “It’s said to be the busiest shopping day of the year. Traffic is going to be heavier.”

Crawford said 911 should only be reserved in emergencies, but added charitably: “In her defence, I get that it is an easy number to call.”

'I get that it's an easy number to call'. What an embarrassing phone call. This lady should be ticketed for wasting public emergency services time.

Waited in line for the 6am Boxing Day sale at Future Shop at Lansdowne. The minute I got in, the first person to leave was an Asian lady who left with a MacBook Air. You only save around $20-30 yet you waited all this time for that?

Oh and funny enough, their alarm system at the front was tripping out. As if it was going insane playing dubstep music.

Ditto on the accounting software (online). My wife also bought Christmas wrapping for next year at Superstore along with our regular groceries. Our tv is about 7 years old now, I think we are the only people that still have a DLP tv. Once we finish our basement (fall 2014), then I may partake in buying a tv on boxing day.
