Just watched this as well, was alright. The biggest impression it left me was it had the same feeling of this book I read about 18 years ago called "House of Leaves" To be sure - the plots are very different but the overall feeling was the same. Kinda feeling claustrophobic and despondent. Its funny though, haven't thought about "House of Leaves" in years and this movie made me think of it early in.

I'll add this about it:  it's around 1hr and 45 minutes long and it seemed shorter.  Which is a good sign.  The movie flows along quite nicely.  Too bad it  was shallow.

The Beach House (2020)

Heard from a reviewer I pay attention to and trust for horror/thriller films that it was quite creepy. Did not get that at all from it. Certainly has an older David Cronenberg and Lovecraft vibe to it. I’d say it’s more a more updated retelling of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I don’t know, think it was ok for such a small budget. It was worth watching, but certainly not as good as reviews have said, either.

Spirited Away

At 38 years of age, this is the first anime I’ve ever watched. Never been in my lane or had friends or family that have been remotely interested in it. So this was hard watch. Now, not a hard watch in that I was bored or didn’t find it fascinating, but that there was so much going on and, from everything I read afterwards, just so many layers that it’s really something you can watch 20 times and still find something new each time, have a different/deeper take away from one watch to another, etc.

I really liked it, but know I’d need to watch it again and again and again to truly appreciate it.

Great movie :metal: Finally got to rewatch it with my kids recently and loved seeing their first time reactions.

Now you need to view some other classics like Akira and the original Ghost In The Shell ;)

My kids will have to wait longer for those two (not age appropriate)

I saw the live action remake of Ghost in the Shell . That was a mistake. The original is on the list.

Have My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke to watch, first.

Yeah...I love me some Scarjo but that movie was :sadno: The original is FAR better.

Totoro is also good... Can't actually recall watching Mononoke (I'm far from an anime authority), I shall have to add that to my list, thanks!

Palm Springs

Like Groundhog Day, an infinite time loop movie, starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Mioloti. Here, each one knows how they got stuck in the loop, as Andy does it first (and we have no clue how long he has been in it for), but they also have no clue how to get out of it. Stuck living the same wedding day over and over again.

I really enjoyed it. While in Groundhog Day’s case, there’s a general idea that Murray was stuck living that day for around 15 years. Here, it’s incredibly difficult to decipher, as there is no clear indicator, as he doesn’t master anything/etc. I have an idea, but I’d share that with someone who’s seen the movie.

Definitely, definitely worth watching.

I won't add another review, but I totally agree with this. Great movie. Perfect pace.

Been watching a lot of movies over the past couple days, with the wife out of town for the week. Tonight, it was:

Relic (2020)

Third horror movie in the last week. This one was great, although not your standard “scary” movie. Here, all the scary bits are a metaphor for a family member slowly losing their mind with dementia. It’s a touching film, with good performances.

Worth watching if you like horror movies and particularly if you’ve had someone close who’s suffered from dementia.

Princess Mononoke

After watching “Spirited Away”, decided to watch more of Hayao Miyazaki’s movies, now going to his other heralded masterpiece, “Princess Mononoke”. I think this movie is a lot easier to follow than Spirited Away, as the story doesn’t have as much going on, although there are still 4-5 themes being conveyed. However, the story is much more linear, the lore, while still obviously Japanese, is a lot easier for those not familiar with Japanese culture to pick up and follow.

However, unlike “Spirited Away”, which I would not have a problem showing an 8 year old, there is no world where I would show this movie to anyone under the age of 12, unless the child was emotionally mature enough to handle the violence being shown, but even then.

One thing I did do differently was watch this with subtitles, instead of the English dub, which I did with Spirited Away. That also seems to have been a much better choice. When I watch SA again, I’ll go that route, as I think messages must not be translated properly to the English dub.

All in all, beautiful watch. Love the imagery, the messages, and the score.

Coherence: 10/10

I think this was my third time re-watching. Probably my favorite low-budget film of all time. Rather than give actors a script, the director gave them cue cards with 'goals for the day' and just let them act out the scene in whatever way came naturally. One of the actors was also the writer of the script and so was able to sometimes steer scenes in the direction they wanted things to go in. Not bad for a movie shot in 5 days on a $50,000 budget, $8,000 of which was spent on a wig they had to buy because they had to do some reshoots and the actor cut her hair.

I haven't talked at all about the plot because it is really just something you need to watch.

Totally forgot that I had watched this a number of years ago. Just saw the trailer on Amazon Prime and instantly remembered it. Great movie.

Transylvania 6-5000

Lol. Wow, this movie was so, so stupid. I can’t really say it’s so dumb it’s funny, it’s just really stupid. We watched it at midnight a few nights ago, which I’m sure played into why we liked it so much.

Greyhound

Tom Hanks, destroyer captain of a ww2 convoy escort.

Spoiler

Hated the music when submarines were shown, had to turn down the sound every time- and it was always the same music.

not so sure that subs would deliberately try trapping and torpedoing the destroyer escorts, when juicy tankers and freighter were much easier targets.

Based on the book "The Good Shepard" by C. F. Forrester.

7.5/10- read spoiler for why so low.

Started off dumb but slightly funny, but just got dumber and humourless as it went on. Worst of all, it became mean-spirited, the exact opposite of its supposed message and central plot device. Couldn’t finish it.

They don’t know how anything “normal” works. One of the most tired tropes in Hollywood movies is the father who works long hours, but is portrayed as someone who hates his kid and doesn’t love his family at all, only to “learn” that there is more to life than work. Please. I’m pretty sure majority of father’s want nothing more than to be around their families, but the, oh what’s the word, “responsibly” of providing for your family and keeping them alive is also kind of important.

The Nun

4/10

I've already forgotten it. This movie felt like one long Diablo cutscene that is worse than what the Blizzard cinematics team can actually pull off.

My personal favorite of Miyazaki's. Ya, you really need to watch those movies subbed. The voice acting from the Japanese actors is much better than the English counterparts for the most part, for instance, Billy Bob Thorton does one of the voices in the English version of this. Doesn't match the character he's voicing at all IMO.
