î мцšт вяздк чфµ
Sony has reportedly patented technology that will prevent the use of second hand games on consoles. According to NeoGAF member gofreak, the patent application was filed on 9 December 2012 by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, and will work by linking individual game discs to a user's account without requiring a network connection meaning any future attempt to use this disc on another user's console won't work. The patent explains that games will come with contactless tags that will be read by your console in much the same way as modern bank cards. When a disc is first used, the disc ID and player ID will be stored on the tag. Every time the disc is used in future, the tag will check if the two ID’s match up and, if not, then the disc won’t work. The document goes on to explain that such a device is part of Sony's ongoing efforts to deter second-hand games sales, and is a far simpler solution than always-on DRM or passwords. It's worth noting that Sony has not confirmed the existence of the device, and the patent doesn't state what machine it will be used in, with later paragraphs also mentioning accessories and peripherals. It does raise some concerns though. Firstly, the impact on game rental stores would be catastrophic as surely this means they'd no longer be able to do business? Given publishers' usual desire to keep retailers sweet by not undercutting them on prices and the like, this would be an unusual move. There's also the issue of what happens should your console break and need replacing, or if you have more than one console. Will the games be linked to your PSN account, meaning they can still be used, or the console, meaning an entire new library of titles would need to be purchased? IGN reached out to Sony for comment but was told the company doesn't comment on rumour and speculation. http://au.ign.com/articles/2013/01/03/report-new-sony-patent-blocks-second-hand-games?utm_source=Targeted%20Blasts&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Breaking+News%3A+Sony+Discs+Patent_11145_587933_587940&utm_content=21335183

sedated
For people saying they'll leave Sony for Microsoft, I hate to disappoint you but almost like a year ago Microsoft had already been talking about doing exactly the same thing and trying to abolish peope renting or sharing games. This probably will not be just a Sony thing. Considering what EA has been doing with making 'online passes' to get money out of second hand game users, it could just as easily be game publishers and developers asking the companies to do something like this so they make as much money as possible. Perfect From Now On
A cheap money grab and a disgusting waste of materials. Can't say I'm surprised though.
hudson bay rules
How many games does Sony actually produce? They will have to collude with/force 3rd party producers to follow suit.
PlayStation
Guys the next xbox is rumored to do the same thing as well as I have read around the web. Either way, complete bullcrap, but if XBOX decides not to, well hello XBOX! (even though I dont purchase used games anymore because I only buy the odd 2 games when they come out, still not being able to go over to a friends with it or whatever is crap)

King Heffy
Asinine. Terrible business deicision; a lot of games I have subsequently bought, I borrowed from a friend to try out. Makes the Wii U suddenly look awfully good.

M A K A V E L I 96
It's a stupid business move and isn't likely to happen. They're going to have to store the disc/system relationship at a centralized location (tying it to a PSN account for example) since the discs aren't writable and the console needs a way to check if it's been used already somewhere else. So, people can't play games when their internet is down or someone could prevent every PS4 owner from playing games by just launching a DDOS attack against the PSN servers.
