westvandude Posted April 3, 2013 Share Posted April 3, 2013 A suggestion: maybe add a little more explanation to the Magic Number in addition to the formula you provided, as I personally didn't quite get what it really was. It's basically the number of games that need to go in favour of the Canucks in comparison with another team for the Canucks to finish ahead of them in the standings. For example, right now Wild is 13.5. That means, we need 13.5 games to go in our favour. Games going in our favour is a Canucks win or a Wild loss (OTL is 0.5 obviously). So if Canucks win their next game and the Wild lose their next game, the Magic Number goes down by 2. As of now, we only have 12 more games, so we'll definitely need Wild to lose some games for us to catch them. Alternatively, if you subtract the Games Remaining from the Magic Number (in this case 13.5 - 12 = 1.5) you get the number of games that we are behind/ahead of that team. So with 1.5, Wild need to lose once in OT and once in Regulation and Canucks to win 2 games for us to catch them. Not sure if the folks here find this anymore helpful or not.
