Dan Murphy@sportsnetmurph

I'm hearing former #blackhawks #wild #oilers d-man Cam Barker may get a try out at #canucks training camp to earn a 7 or 8 blueline spot.

That would be a good one. Barker was so highly touted after being on the WJHC gold medal winning teams

Seems like he deserves a chance to prove himself

Why? The guy couldn't even make it on the Texas Stars of the AHL, they let him walk after a 25 game tryout this year. If I remember correctly, he's also had a couple of ankle injuries that have pretty much all but destroyed his lateral movement. Maybe for the 6-8th spot on the wolves, but that's about it, IMO

It's a tryout. Don't act like they up and gave the guy a contract.

Besides, we don't even know if this is legitimately happening.

More competition is a good thing. He has the talent to play at the NHL level, just never put it all together. Low risk, medium reward.

Seems like a low risk/ high reward move. I never understood what happened to this guy...he showed so much promise early.

Are you CRAZY??? Trade Green for ONE first round pick?? He's restricted after this season.... He WILL get an offer sheet for 7-8 million from a number of teams regardless if he plays another minute for us or not. That offer sheet would be worth 4 first round draft choices.

Some fans overrate their players, and then there is this guy.

I wouldn't mind him here. It adds more depth to our defence since we have been battling with injuries on the blueline for years now and with departure of Rome. He does have size and strength, but the problem is he is Inconsistent.

He may not be fantastic, but hes big bodied and has shown an ability to log big minutes, even +/- on the Oilers last season in 25 games.

Still.. I think I prefer Alberts as the big bodied plug D

Absolutely. I think it would be foolish to pass up on a guy like that if you can at least offer him a tryout.

A big dude @ 6'3 220. A few very solid seasons: 40pts in 68 games. 14 in 51. 18 in 45.

And he's by no means over the hill @ 26 years old. Half this board is older than the guy.... Well, maybe not.

He was a super high pick...I'd be actually pretty happy if this were true.

Maybe he just needs a change of scenery. A city's atmosphere and a team that will accept you can do a lot for a player's confidence in the NHL. He's a big-bodied defenceman who could re-kindle his career and has no down-side since it's just a tryout.

Nothing to be lost from giving him a tryout. If he performs well and impresses the staff, he's added on a cheap one-year deal. If he disappoints, we continue on as normal. Wouldn't mind seeing him on the lower end of the D chart in case of injuries (which could be devastating in such a short season).

Cam Barker has the physical tools to become a big player in the NHL. Too bad, he's slow, has low hockey IQ, and lacks dedication. Fix 1/3 of those problems and he's back in the NHL. Fix 2/3 and he's in your top 4. Fix 3/3 of those problems. You got top defense man. Good luck.

There is absolutely no risk in inviting Barker to camp. If he performs, that is, plays physically, doesn't turn the puck over and shows some mobility, Barker could be a great pick up.

Do it.

AFAIK he's had some very big struggles with D&A abuse. I like giving those guys a 2nd chance like we did last year w/ Todd Fedoruk.

Good luck, Cam.

Kassian.... Taylor Pyatt 3.0

Lies. He's more of a Steve Bernier. Hopefully his talent level goes up so he can become like a Taylor Pyatt.

I wouldn't mind Barker at all. Him and Vandermeer would be solid for depth on D.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

Cam Barker is going to need to be exceptional to live up to the name "Aaron Rome's Replacement".

What's with all this "Rome Replacement" talk just about any D-man we pick up for the 7th/8th position will be better then Rome. The guy had 0 defensive awareness and that cheeky hit cost us all the momentum in Boston during the Cup Final. *Anyone but Rome is a valid summary for our 7th/8th dman slots.

Cam Barker has played 296 games in the NHL getting 94 points, or in other words 3.6 full seasons averaging 26 points per year ( assuming he played a full year which he never really has). He also scored 21 goals, for an average of just under 6 goals per season.

Averaging 6 goals and 26 points per season is a hell of a lot better than some defensemen in the NHL, I would say he would be a decent 7th d-man. The question of course is if he has the motivation and self control (alcohol abuse) to turn his career around.

Definitely a gamble.

That's what people said last year when Edmonton picked him up. They needed D (and still do) and yet they let him go.

He wasn't particularly amazing on the Spengler Cup team. He didn't stand out in a good way at all, but maybe did ok enough to not get noticed for the wrong things. Hardly anything to get excited about though.

AFAIK he's had some very big struggles with D&A abuse. I like giving those guys a 2nd chance like we did last year w/ Todd Fedoruk.

Good luck, Cam.

Exactly, heard it was as well and hope it's something he recovers from personally, but who knows if he has any impact here. It's more likely he is just trying to get a camp somewhere so all the teams get a look at him.

After all that, I might just be more comfortable than him as our depth than I am after watching Joslin (his last game was a good one finally but it's the only one I've seen) with the Wolves.

If it means joslin stays in the ahl then I'm for barker. Playing bottom six minutes isn't bad for him. Edmonton was brutal on D last year as a group. Still would want Vandermeer as a Rome replacement. Still need a 2nd line center man for the year until playoffs...

He's gotten plenty of chances to prove himself. He couldn't stick with any NHL team(including the Oilers) and got cut from Texas of the AHL recently. I think this is nothing more than the Canucks trying to add more competition since they love to do that. He's just flat out bad.

It couldn't hurt to give him a shot. Depth on the back end during a very, very tight schedule wouldn't be a bad thing.
