[PTO] Cam Barker with Canucks?

Barker on a PTO is a great idea.

For those saying he got 'cut' from Texas, that's not all that accurate. He had only signed a 25-game tryout and it wasn't renewed.. probably partially because Dallas wanted some of their prospects to see some more ice.

He led the Stars in shots and had 8 points (3 goals) in 23 games - pace for 29 points/82 games. He played 4 games in the Spengler Cup, was the only defenseman who wasn't ALREADY playing in Europe and stood his ground alright. Before being traded to the Wild he had 40 points in 68 games, followed up by 14 (23 pace) in 51 with the Hawks.

He's 6'3 and 222 pounds and only 26 years old and at worst he'll bring competition to training camp. Barker is exactly the type of guy you want on a PTO.

Sure he's a great PTO, but I'm sick of MG going for puck moving defencemen. He tried that with MAG and that failed, as did the Ballard experiment and Ehrhoff ended up playing horribly for us in the finals due to injuries because he was far too fragile.

It's proven now - to win Cups in the playoffs you need a big, physical, veteran defence, not a fast and fragile offensive defence. Look down the list, every team to win a Cup in the last 5-7 years have had 2 puck movers and 4 solid, physical shutdown defencemen. Here are the only puck moving D men of the last cup winners:

L.A: Doughty and Voynov

Boston: Chara and Kaberle

Chicago: Keith and Campbell

Pittsburgh: Letang and Gonchar

Detroit: Lidstrom and Rafalski

Sure all those guys play solid defence too, but the rest of their defences were built from physical shutdown guys. Now look at the Canucks in 2011:

Ehrhoff, Salo, Edler, Bieksa and Ballard were puck movers. Hamhuis and Rome were our only shutdown guys.

Now the Canucks in 2012/2013:

Edler, Bieksa and Ballard are the puck movers. Hamhuis and Garrison are our physical guys.

Definately a step in the right direction, but we're still not physical enough. Ideally we get one more physical defenceman for our bottom pairing and get rid of Ballard because we don't need more offensive defencemen. Cam Barker is exactly one of those, and I'd much rather have Vandemeer or Kubina on our bottom pairing.
