Excellent post. Dave Nonis saved this franchise - and lost his job - by not buckling under the pressure of the Aquilini's to acquire Brad Richards and make a run for the playoffs in 2007-08. That would've reportedly cost us Kesler, Edler, and Schneider.

Also correcr about Brule/Schneider - amazing what the role of luck plays in sports/life. Hard to think that Columbus is just so woeful at choosing their players; there's gotta be something inherent in that system that just stunts development. Brule was a high probability pick. Filatov's talent is incredible - another guy that was thought-of as high probability. Derick Brassard. Steve Mason. All of these disappointing young players makes me think that there's a systemic issue.

Brule's career trajectory probably would be far different today had he been drafted by the Canucks.

Nonis offered Edler, Schneids and a 1st for Richards and was declined......

Maybe if we he had Brule instead of Columbus he could have had time to properly develop into the player he could have been. Remember way back in 2005? He was tearing it up with the Giants. I would have probably made that trade, too, if I was Nonis.

Surprised MacLean admitted to not taking this trade.

In a parallel universe, if this had happened, perhaps Bono woulda' been picked up hitchin' by Schneids, only to be thoroughly entertained by his witty impersonations...

This looks pretty bad because now you look at it and Schneider is #1 Goalie and Brule has trouble staying in the league.

But who knows, if we had made this trade might no have turned out as bad, maybe we wouldn't have rushed him and he would have become the player he was supposed to be.

The funny thing is everyone probably would have praised him if the deal was made too.

at the time with the luongo trade fresh on the books, i would have been very happy to have brule in our system. Goes to show hindsight is truly 20/20 :P

Doug MacLean on Hockeycentral today said he got a call from Dave Nonis back when Nonis took over the GM role with the Canucks and Dave offered Schneider straight up for Brule.

How different would our organization look of that had happened eh?

Bruce would have developed much better here and Schneider probably wouldn't be the goalie he is if he didn't learn under Luongo... u can't compare two players who developed in Columbus vs Vancouver... come on.
The NHL is a fixed old boys club. I've come to acceptance with that and just watch for entertainment. The 2011 & 2012 Canucks are champs in my books.
