Bruce McCurdy sounds like the young twit in "Trouble with the Curveball."

Anyone could look suspect playing on Edmonton's back end.

Yeah, if worse comes to worse, he goes down the Wolves.

In his 23 game AHL stint this year, he was leading his team in shots with 66 over 23 games and had 8 points (pace for 29).

Either way, I like this signing.

Edmonton paid him $2.2mil last season.

It is clear that he's a bust, but you wonder if at $700k you'll still get value.

Thing is, even on horrible teams, he couldn't make the cut.

Must be more deals or waiver pick up or signing left. GilmAn says in the team 1040 that there were " multiple transactions" being looked at. Gotta think Greg as not finished yet

It's clear he isn't going to be a high-output defenseman soon, but has shown flashes of being a decent top-6 defenseman with good size. If his off-ice issues are behind him, he has good potential for an 8th defenseman.

I like this signing lowrisk and he can be a solid 7th defenceman with puckmoving ability. Oilers had him in a bigger role that's why he most likely didn't play to their expectation seeing how he is a depth defenceman who is prone to make more mistakes with more minutes. I don't have high expectations for him though I expect him to be decent with some brainfarts.

Hopefully he can regain his Backhawk form. He was a beast on the powerplay. But he was a raging alcoholic apparently which is why Chicago got rid of him.

If he's useless, he's signed for under 900,000 and will be sent to the Wolves and not counted towards the cap.

Well, if he proves to be better than Rome I would be happy.

This would make this signing a success for me.

Anyone else think that with this signing, it might be better to send Tanev down and give him top line minutes?

Maybe if Barker was more of a sure thing, Tanev has proved he's good enough to play on the big team, he needs to be there to develop, I think he is past the point of benefit logging more time in the AHL.

Edmonton paid him $2.2mil last season.

It is clear that he's a bust, but you wonder if at $700k you'll still get value.

He did blow last year for edmonton, and before with minny... But it could turn out to be a higgins, lappy type thing where he comes into an environment full of mature, veteran leaders that he can take a back seat and focus on finding his game and contributing in that way. Where they force him, simply by their attitudes and approach to buy into the canucks system.

Here's to hoping it works out, great gamble on a likely 7th or 8th dman with 3rd pairing potential.

I think whoever plays the best during training camp will dictate who gets sent down. If Tanev outplays Barker and Alberts then he stays. Might be a good idea to send Tanev down and give him top minutes. Thats the luxury about having defensive depth for this shortened season.

In Chicago, Barker was good on the PP and because of his large size had a good ability to keep the puck in the zone... something I would like to see when the Canucks have only 1 defenseman on the point in one of their set ups.

He'll have to work for a chance to play on the PP, but Rome got his chance last year, so you never know.

Barker - Edler with Kesler in front of the net intrigues me, especially with Barker's AHL stats - 66 shots in 23 games, lots of pucks at the net between the two and Kes doing the dirty work..

Some defensive depth with potential to jump up @ 700k? Not much to not like about this signing.

Even in Edmonton where has "sh*tting the bed" he still had 35 shots in 25 games, probably without any confidence. He likes to shoot the puck.

MAG, Rome, Ballard, Alberts and Tanev - all of the Canucks' depth guys last year took less than a shot per game. Now the Canucks have a depth defenseman who likes to shoot. I like that.
