I've read multiple scouting reports that say he is slow as molasses, lacks defensive awareness, plays with zero intensity, doesn't hit or block shots.

The fact we signed him shows how bad Connauton, Joslin and Sauve have played this year. It would have been nice if we picked up Matheson, he and Tanev played awesome together. I miss the Moose (we used to always sign their players).

Barker is a plug. I guess the canucks can bury him in the minors afterwards.

If he's useless, he's signed for under 900,000 and will be sent to the Wolves and not counted towards the cap.

Exactly. Low risk signing. Why not give him a shot? You never know

Gillis on Barker: He's been injured past few years, we think there's upside. We want to give opportunity to reinvent his career

Theres a big difference on a 4m+ opportunity to "reinvent" careers and a 700k chance to "reinvent" career.
I have no problem with Barker signing here and wish him the best.

Good low-risk move for a depth d-man.

I don't know much about Barker but he's got a decent shot from what I could remember.

Luongo flat out robbed him here:

If his substance abuse problems are under control (which I suspect that due to the Canucks signing him right out of his PTO on day 1 of camp, I like this signing. If I remember correctly, Chris Higgins was another draft bust who partied a little too hard before he came to Vancouver. There's always the possibility he turns it around like Chris did.

Sorry guys not too familiar with Cam. What kind of defender is he? How old? How big? Right or lefty? All I know is that he was drafted pretty high, or was pretty high when he was drafted..

So basically another Andrew Alberts at 700k. Whatever I'll take it.

The Oilers sucked anyways. It's hard to judge a player on a bad team. The suckiness rubs off on everyone.

I for one am not so optimistic about this signing. Minny and Oilers fans had absolutely nothing good to say about him:

He could be this year's Peter Schaefer. I still think that we should've signed Morrison last off season.

And we are passing on Jim Vandermeer... at least he is a proven vet.

If he finds his game, it will be a massive steal.

Vandermeer is proven in the way that he's "proven" that he's near useless. Barker's been useless in the same way, but at least he's had a good NHL season to his name.

This is a typical aquisition for the Nux of late...

Higgins and Lapierre were in the same boat, but have managed to find a way to contribute. Booth was also trending downwards. (He has this season to prove his worth)

This is likley his last stop in the league for Barker, should he be unable to find a productive role, and at 700,000, its really not much of a gamble, and he could always be a decent addition to the Wolves should he be placed on waivers.

At least Vandy can handle himself when the going gets tough....we need this more than what CB brings.

I thought he was pretty tough with size, but after checking his fights on youtube, I am disappointed. Alberts is even better than him.
We should go for the Jimmy V guy instead of Cam Barker.

I like this signing for a couple reasons: 1) A depth defense man with a lot of potential and skill 2) Was part of a winning culture in Chicago before being tossed into rebuilding projects, which may have effected his motivation 3) If, Cam Barker has a history of substance abuse (alcohol), lets not forget that BC has the toughest drinking laws in Canada. The threat of what could happen if he makes a mistake while drinking should help him (and the organization) keep Cam's focus on hockey.

I think the problem in Minnesota and Edmonton was they still expected him to be "the guy", even though his substance abuse issues sort of skewed his career trajectory. He wont have pressure on him in Vancouver to be "the guy", he just has to be consistent. I'm all for the signing. If he works out, you get a solid defenseman at a heck of a good price. If he doesn't, we send him to the minors. I don't know how anyone can complain about this, it's practically zero risk aside from the money coming out of Aquillini's wallet if we send him to the AHL.

Plus, comeback stories are always nice if they work out.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

I think it's a good signing, he hasn't been on a contender team in awhile and maybe knowing that he is now even as depth will give him a reason to fight for a top 6 spot. If he could get back into the form he had when he was in chicago it would be a steal of a signing

Can't see this guy bumping Tanev or Alberts. At least it's a two way contract. Anyone know how many more contracts the Nucks have left?

This signing seems to anticipate a possible injury to a d-man this season.

Barker will have limited minutes with a healthy lineup, but I will admit he is more experienced than an average callup if injuries force a shakeup on the backend.
