Canucks will likely have one of the lowest GAA in the league this year and he'll likely subsequently end up with some decent looking stats no matter how well/bad he plays. As long as he doesn't completely eat $h!t he'll probably end up with a contract with someone for next year.

This signing seems to anticipate a possible injury to a d-man this season.

Barker will have limited minutes with a healthy lineup, but I will admit he is more experienced than an average callup if injuries force a shakeup on the backend.

I'd say it's more of a Rome replacement.

Joslin hasn't been up to par and might as well keep K-Con down to start this short season.

Absolutely no harm in this. Last chance for this dude, and I'm sure he knows it.

Reference to a certain sports movie where a GM is played by a certain actor who employs a theoretical approach to signing players.

Ha Ha ok so your right I havent seen that movie but know what you are refering to now. Good one!

Tanev has the 6th spot over Alberts and barker

Only if he outplays both Alberts and Barker. Its not guaranteed for anyone, they have to earn their roster spots. Anything could happen.

Can't see this guy bumping Tanev or Alberts. At least it's a two way contract. Anyone know how many more contracts the Nucks have left?

Is it a two way? Thought it was a one way 700,000 deal. Anyone know for sure?

Is he still a drunk? I hope so I've missed the Canucks having a boozer since SOB left.

Just check out the Roxy and see if he is there....

Isnt he on PTO? I guess they already saw enough to sign him... :o

Personally, I wanted Vandermeer cause i felt he is what the Canucks need in the blueline, butttttt i guess MG wanted another project.

700k is alright for a 7th/8th defenceman, the Oilers signed this guy at 2.5m last year LOL.

I like this signing, low risk and maybe he could turn out, either way a solid depth option.

Anyone else think that with this signing, it might be better to send Tanev down and give him top line minutes?

Tanev is better than Barker defensively right now. Barker was just released from an AHL team because of his bad defensive plays. Lets see what he will do with his chance here before we put him on regular shifts and send Tanev down.

I think it is just crazy that he was a 3rd overall pick behind Ovechkin and Malkin.... talk about a drop off in talent :)

Fine signing, better than Rome.

I'm not a Cam Barker fan at all, but nothing wrong with a cheap depth signing that can be sent down.

Good deal.

Like I mentioned before in the other thread: He's 26. Huge frame. Statistically has had very solid seasons before. You would be dumb not to offer the guy a contract if there was room for him.

I honestly really like this signing. He's pretty far removed from two-time World Junior champ and top prospect Cam Barker but the guy managed to at least stay a 0 on +/- in Edmonton while throwing some hits. I think he can do alright in the Canucks' scheme, and it's not exactly a massive risk if he fails to impress as a 7th/8th D.

First we have to see how he plays before giving him top 6 minutes. People should temper their expectations of this guy and see how he does first. It could be like Peter Schaefer all over again or it could be like the Chris Higgins rejuvenation.

And of course you cannot see how he performs until he is signed to a contract. But the reasons mentioned are justification for that contract.

I think we might be pleasantly surprised with Barker. Guy hasn't been surrounded with much depth since the Blackhawks and hasn't had a solid defensive system to play in. Should do well under AV if he's rotating in/out on the 3rd pairing.

This is a good signing. One that could pay off well. And even if it doesn't, it'll be depth and at the lowest possible price.

No danger here.

Way more interesting than Derek Joslin or someone similar.

Good depth signing. It's a clear indication that none of our Wolves D prospects are close to cracking the line-up. Could also be an indication that we may move a D-man in a trade before the season.

The Oilers and Wild fans that say Barker sucked, only say that cause they had high expectations of him. People see that he's a former 3rd overall pick right away and so they ovverrate him.

Plus those teams D were so bad, they expected him to be a top 4 defenseman, which he's not.

As a 7th or 8th D-man, he's a solid addition. He basically brings what Rome brought as far as grit, but he can move the puck a whole lot better. Still, don't expect him to be some sort of star player, cause he's not.

Low risk, high reward. Surely a pretty win-win? Especially if he get's his old form back.

I would've liked to see him on a PTO first. A tryout before signing him to a contract but maybe he had other ideas.

It doesn't mean we move any of out top 4 D. This is just a depth signing and it shows with the amount paid out to this guy. We will probably keep all of our D unless we are trading for a big name player in a multi-player deal.
