I have to say, the Canucks organization is incredibly Classy. Giving guys like Torres, Barker, Fedoruk (PTO last year) a chance when their careers are down the tube is a class act.

Mike Gillis hockey career -top draft pick, bad injury, no second chances, end of career.

Yeah he can related to them, which I think is great. Guys like Higgins which A.V. mentioned who get bounced around have been great for us when we've been able to find where they stick. It'll be interesting to see if Barker can fix his career at this point.

Well, it doesn't hurt us and the pay-off will be huge when he hits the jackpot.

If what Gillis is saying about the contract not being an issue, he'd better get a lot for Luongo.

Thanks for posting. GM MG sounds so cool and in control with all things Luongo.
AV sounds so simple-minded at times, but focused on icing a good product for Saturday and beyond.

Barker doesn't leave much of a soundbyte, but I'm not that interested in what he says, I'm more interested in how he performs. He seems like a worthwhile project, and I like how most of his fights shown on Youtube come as a result of him sticking up for his teammates.

I can potentially see it happening. With the high caliber, steady D-core that we have, I can see him really benefiting from that. As well, he will be slotted into that 6th/7th D spot which will be less pressure for him (vs. the top 4 spot he had to fill on the Oilers) so he can play his game and move up to a bigger role if he continues to perform and improve.

Agreed. I have noticed MG acquiring players who were drafted very high but then went downhill and didn't meet their expectations like Bernier, Malhotra and now Barker. Kudos to MG for giving them a second chance with a team like the Canucks.

Summary:

- giving Cam Barker an opportunity to reinvent his career, as he's battled injuries etc. Worked for other players in the past

- more interest in Luongo from other teams since CBA being sorted out
- Gillis has no interest in keeping a portion of his contract
- feels no pressure involving the goalie market

- feels that a lack of exhibition games increases risk of injury

- Frank Corrado is the only junior player attending camp
- believes he deserves recognition
- unsure why he wasn't in WJC

- "favorable contract" penalty if player retires early is not much of a concern for Gillis

- looking forward to camp competition regarding Kesler's temporarily vacant position
- believes Kesler wont be out too much longer

- hopes reffing is tight.

- Gillis likes us fans... isnt that sweet?

....few pretty stupid questions in there as well...

AV; short schedule:

- small inter-squad games a couple days

- has a plan! ...
- harder practice in the wake of a lack of exhibitions
- a challenging schedule
- not much time to develop young talent

- hopes Barker recognizes the chance he's being given
- Barker reminds him of Higgins
- been on radar for a while
- puck-moving PPQB potential capabilities

- expects Lack to possibly start skating again soon
- unsure of Kesler timeline

- not too concerned about conditioning

- gives credit to Dale Wiese in europe, willing to give an opportunity here
- hopes he can provide a 3rd/4th-line energy role

- hopes for a more well-rounded team; 4 lines, 3d-pairs that can all play

- unsure of what type of hockey we'll see in a shortened season

... more stupid questions as well... most of this interview was pretty hypothetical

Cam Barker:

- extied
- hopes things to work out ... small steps
- hopes to play an offensive d-man role

I agree, I really like this signing. Barker has good size and was drafted very high, if he could find a home here the pay off could be great.

I liked his attitude in the sound clip here. It sounds like he knows exactly what he has to do, and he sounds excited for the opportunity.

Hoping that the reffing is tight throughout the season to the last minute of the SCF's is a nice and dreamy fairytale and not one a GM should indulge himself with.
The .org should be recruiting first and second line protection as asking Zach to provide that role at this stage of his career on the first or second is an illusionary stretch.

I think Barker will get his form back. Just a few seasons ago he was a top young d-man that teams wanted. Chi just couldn't afford to keep him along with Keith, Seabrook and Campbell at the time.

I like the Barker signing, if he doesn't work out we can just waive him, but he has far more upside than most plugs we would sign for $700k.

Besides, he can become the new Ballard, and Ballard can be promoted to actually playing. And he certainly can't be worse than Joslin.

Agree with virtually everything all three of them said.
Except one oddity - the talk of moving Edler to the right side. Found that strange considering Garrison's experience playing RS to Campbell.

Agreed, however I wouldn't be surprised that Garrison's production drop off may have had something to do with when he switched sides. Perhaps they're working around his shot.

My thoughts are that he must of made a good impression with the guys during "lockout" skates.
The players obviously like him.
I say this as he didn't even have to go with the PTO and is now signed.
Great signing for us and we have a depth d-man @ low $$$. Depth at all positions mean a lot.

This isn't a bad move. He still has to make the team. Gillis knows more than any one here. There's lots of people criticizing Gillis on his moves. Maybe the move they should think about is moving out of their parent's house and paying some bills of their own. Might even want to pay your student loans off too.
Than come to the table and criticize Gillis.
It will never fail. Don't sign Barker and watch him go some where else and thrive. Then you have people wondering why Gillis didn't go get this guy for cheep.
Gillis knows what fans think and doesn't care. Thank God!

Really surprised by the lack of exhibition games.. That may not bode well in the long stretch. I hope that no serious injuries occur as the result, but hopefully they've been working hard to get to full fitness in practice, and no injuries will arise.. Let's see if that happens.

With Vandemmeer being signed we now have 9 D.
I think we may see Ballard departing with Lou in the near future.
Someone has to go.

Barker or Vandermeer aren't replacing Ballard. I doubt there's going to be a trade.

Barker and Vandermeer are challenging for the 8th spot and the loser will go to Chicago and give us some extra depth.

Ballard's contract is to pricey to keep him past this season anyway and Alberts is number 8 or 9.
Barker and Vandermeer are 7 and 8.

Well, isn't Barker another left shot, left side D guy who can skate the puck? At one point in his young career very well... Taking note of skate the puck! Also willing but sort of ordinary at fighting!

That was what we brought in Ballard for; so isn't there some possibility of him creating a chance to move Ballard and his salary.
