The Wolves could use some veteran leadership and a great call up if we get bit by the injury bug.

Good work Gillis

I like it, gives our team a legitimate tough guy. He isn't a bad player either.
Really like this move.

Having 9 NHL-capable Dmen is pretty normal for this team. I really don't think this is a precursor to a D trade.

I doubt either Barker or Vandermeer will climb up the Canucks depth chart, which simply means the Wolves defense will be very strong.

Canucks:

Edler
Hamhuis
Bieksa
Garrison
Ballard
Tanev
Alberts

Wolves:

Jim Vandermeer
Cam Barker
Kevin Connauton
Derek Joslin
Mark Matheson
Peter Andersson
Brad Hunt
Yann Sauve

The unfortunate side to this is the Canucks' D prospects are going to get much less minutes and experience as I'm guessing the Wolves will prefer to go with a veteran starting D lineup of Vandermeer, Barker, Joslin, Matheson, Hunt and probably Connauton. So that's one Canucks D prospect.

Ballard - Tanev
Barker - Vandermeer
Alberts - Connauton

I agree.
But, it is also nice to have the luxury of putting in more toughness(JV or Barker) for a game or if Alberts is playing poor or Tanev is struggling it's great to know they can be replaced easily with decent defenseman .

Vancouver might be getting ready to move a deman. No question that's a depth signing. Nice tough player.

Barker or Vandermeer will stay up as an 8th defenseman.

Always nice when you can further bump Joslin down the depth chart.

Whether its been GMMG or Nonis, they routinely talk about the importance of depth at defence in the Western Conference. Great to see MG actually address that issue.

OMG we could've had McKeown!

I think Virtanen was a terrible pick given that he's out for 6 months which will hinder his development. You don't pick someone at #6 under that circumstance, along with the fact that he was given a 3/5 IQ (aka he's dumb).

God dammit Benning. WHY VIRTANEN? Terrible move.

Down by the River - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

@BradZiemer: Vandermeer: "You guys all know that it is kind of the rumour going around, that they needed a little more push-back to their game...

@BradZiemer: More Vandermeer: "And I know I can bring that." #Canucks

@BradZiemer: Vandermeer says some of the #Canucks he skated with at UBC during the lockout spoke to management on his behalf.

Interesting quote that he say we need toughness, which is true, but still kind of a backhanded insult. We have 3 options now for that 6th D toughness - Alberts, Barker, Vandermeer.

Alberts and Barker aren't options for "toughness".

Vandermeer is our guy for that.

We need someone that can step up to the plate and deliver that bone-crunching hit -- even if that supposed hit was on the line/crosses the line. Hopefully Barker or Vandermeer can replace what Rome (Horton) and Willie Mitchell (Toews) did.

I can see one of those 3 coming in for Tanev for more physical matchups, ie. against Chicago.

Signing a 9th D-man doesn't mean that we're trading somebody, just that we want to be prepared in case 3 of them get injured at any point (a plausible scenario, especially with our luck). Plus, Vandermeer is a veteran guy who can help out on the farm team in a leadership role.

Certainly going to be our #1 defensemen. Give him a couple more years to improve his game and he'll be our new and improved version of Matthias Ohlund in no time

I don't see hitting as a problem. Edler, Bieksa, Ballard, and Garrison can all throw big hits. Whether it be standing up players or throwing a hip check here or there.

What we need is some nastiness in front of our net, and someone who's willing to keep the other team from running around.

Vandermeer has played fourth line winger before so he also brings that as an option.(albeit so has Alberts and Ballard but I think Vandermeer would be a lot more effective if called on to do so)

I love this signing. Canucks need some more toughness. They don't need to win the president's trophy again, they need to win the Stanley Cup.

This guy could be our 7 or 8 Dman. I like this signing a lot better than Cam Barker signing.

Anyone else have a feeling a trade will occur something like Lu being packaged with a guy like Ballard?

Could be since we have like 9 D, but I think it's just depth.

As much as I would like to see Lu packaged with ballard I think no one wants to take on that kind of salary. It's more likely, while not my choice, that it would be Lu and Tanev.

I actually think this is great, much more excited about this than Cam Barker. Cheap contract, and a tough player. Will be great for depth. God signing.

Now the people who were whining about signing Barker over Vandy can shut the hell up.

THANK YOU GILLIS.

Meh, both depth guys competing for the 8th spot. Each has their strong suits and can be sent to the AHL without affecting our cap. Barker has more potential (but is unlikely to realize it to his previous performances) and Vandermeer is a known quantity who brings toughness.

I wonder if he might come ahead of Alberts though, as Alberts has been very so so in his time here. The other option would be a trade, where we dump Ballard's contract somewhere and have both offensive and defensive depth to cover his absence. An Edler deal is still very unlikely.

The great thing about getting a tougher player like this, it improves the "toughness" match ups all the way up the roster.

If Vandermeer takes on the opposing goon (probably losing as he isn't a legit heavyweight... but he plays 12 minutes a game vs. them on for 2 minutes)... it means that all of a sudden Weise, Volpatti, Bieksa, Zassian line up against lesser opponents who they are probably tougher than. Everyone gets to play a little bigger.

I also think that with so many games against Edmonton this year, it is a good idea to play a little tougher. they are a team we can push around a little even if we can't match them in pure skill.
