Hopefully he can be the guy who will make forward players think twice before crashing the crease. It's been too long since we have had a nasty SOB protecting our crease.

I don't see hitting as a problem. Edler, Bieksa, Ballard, and Garrison can all throw big hits. Whether it be standing up players or throwing a hip check here or there.

What we need is some nastiness in front of our net, and someone who's willing to keep the other team from running around.

EXACTLY! We need some players with a genuine mean streak in them. AV keeps trying to force players into that that role i.e. Oreskovich. That won't ever work.

Interesting quote that he say we need toughness, which is true, but still kind of a backhanded insult. We have 3 options now for that 6th D toughness - Alberts, Barker, Vandermeer.

Barker and toughness in the same sentence?

Alberts isn't particularly tough either, he's a big body but not known for "toughness".

Vandermeer is the only one who brings toughness and nastiness.

Love this signing. I expect many injuries this season, particularly groin injuries. Its good to have depth at D.

You have to go quite a while back to find a dman on the Canucks who will actually seek out others to fight. We have had a number of dmen who are willing to drop the gloves for a teammate, or who will drop the gloves when invited. Vandermeer is actually a relative heavyweight who will actively seek out someone to fight.

I like this signing

Garrison Edler
Hamhius Bieksa
Tanev Ballard
Alberts/Vandemeer

OMG we could've had McKeown!

I think Virtanen was a terrible pick given that he's out for 6 months which will hinder his development. You don't pick someone at #6 under that circumstance, along with the fact that he was given a 3/5 IQ (aka he's dumb).

God dammit Benning. WHY VIRTANEN? Terrible move.

Down by the River - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

I'm surprised he signed a two-way! Way to go GMMG.

Vandermeer, Alberts, Barker > Rome, Alberts, Sulzer for the role they are expected to play IMO. More flexible contracts too.

Maybe its the only reason we would have signed him.

So depth on D: Check

Depth in net: Check

Depth up front: ?

Just need some better depth down the middle, and maybe another gritty winger to upgrade the bottom 6, and we're pretty good I think.

Maybe, but that makes me think he wanted to play in Vancouver more badly than other teams which is a good sign.

All we need now is a decent center to replace Kesler until he is cleared to play.

Which is why I'm hoping Schroeder is ready.

I'd rather not see us give up our depth in net this season for a temporary fix.

I don't get this part about him not being subject to waivers? If we send him down to the Wolves, I assume he still has to clear waivers, but no re-entry? Am I missing something?

With veterans promoting the unrestricted free agent defenceman, he was signed to a one-year, two-way deal Monday for $600,000 US at the NHL level and $275,000 in the minors. The 32-year-old Caroline, Alta. native is not subject to waivers and might want to buy those vocal supporters an adult beverage or two.

There are no re-entry waivers anymore.

I don't know why he wouldn't be subject to regular waivers though.

Seems like AV's kind of player. Tough stay at home D-man. Could be the next Rome in AV's mind?

Still missing a right winger for the second line. Without one we're not going far this year.

If only Jensen were another year older.

I have faith in Kassian though. I think he could surprise some people.

Bit worried. I would rather we go after a center in case Schroeder isn't ready for 2nd line NHL. Now unless Luongo brings us a center or we do a 2 for 1 deal we cant sign any fa centers as we are at the limit for contracts.

Another great cheap signing. Hopefully Vandemeer and Barker are just for depth and not to replace an Edler trade. Suddenly our D looks pretty good:

Edler - Garrison
Hamhuis - Bieksa
Vandemeer - Ballard
Tanev - Barker
Alberts

That's a playoff-ready defence.

Either a trade is on the way or Tanev is heading back to the AHL.

It is true that the Canucks will not carry 9 D-men on the 23 man roster. Obviously Hammer, Bieksa and Garrison all have non-trade deals and are not going anywhere. Everything else is on the table -- it just depends on who comes back the other way.

Or Vandermeer could end up on the Wolves. But his toughness would help the team so he has a good shot at staying. My guess (and obviously it is just a guess) is that Ballard gets traded.

For 90% of the games, I would still have Tanev in over Vandermeer. Also, Ballard needs to play the left. We've all seen how strongly he under performs when they play him on his off side. That Ballard - Tanev pairing is real smooth.

Exactly! I don't particularly want a + 25 point dman throwing punches. Never seen a lot of Garrison so don't know his game. I realize he put points up last year and had a good shutdown year the season before that. But as you say we need a tough guy in front of the net. I like the signing.

Does the waiver rule still exist for contracts under $1 million? That's the case for recall but what about when sent down?

YES! Finally an established veteran fighter!

I love the guys attitude too. Willing to play in the minors if needed.

Make no mistake, he has excellent fighting ability. Considered a middle weight at 6'1 215 but has NO problem taking on the heavies.

Has fought the likes of Lucic, Thornton and even Big Mac and Boogey.

The guy genuinely loves to fight, ear to ear smile every time he drops the mitts.
