The Flyers have named Claude Giroux the 19th captain in team history:

Claude Giroux was named the 19th captain of the Flyers Tuesday night.

The club had considered doing it Thursday night at Wells Fargo Center during the Flyers open house practice but changed its mind.

Giroux, who turned 25 earlier this month, inherits the “C” from Chris Pronger, who has not played a game since November 2011 because of post-concussion syndrome.

Last week during the player-only workouts at Skate Zone before the lockout “officially” ended, Giroux, who has had a commanding influence in the dressing room, was talking and acting very much like a captain.

In many ways, he’s been just that for coach Peter Laviolette and teammates during Pronger’s long absence.

"it’s not going to change my game or the way I act on the ice or off the ice," Giroux said. "We have a lot of leaders in this locker room, and a lot of veterans. "

Since Pronger didn't play last year, who was the acting captain? One of the Assistant Captains?

Not surprising.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

My favourite player. Much deserving of this.

Gotta get a C on my jersey now!

I never got an A on mine. I held out because I had a feeling he would be Captain

I don't like Giroux, but with that being said he definitely deserves to be the captain. He was the Flyers leader last year after Pronger went down. Not surprising that he was named captain really.

He deserves the captaincy, but what if Pronger comes back? Will Pronger just get an "A"? I doubt that Pronger comes back, but for Philly's sake, I hope he does.

This is from Paul Holmgrem. He was talking about Pronger and a potential return

“Down the road? I guess you could say slight chance,” Holmgren said in an NHL.com report. “But I’d probably classify it as highly unlikely. Nothing’s changed.”

Good choice, he's not too inexperienced, but he's also still young enough to be a long-term leader.

Pronger's done. Besides, if 25 does come back, Mark Messier could always sign on with the Flyers organization and steal both their C's.

Let's hope he does, and then forces Philly to trade Proger and Giroux to the Nucks!

Ah yes... the illustrious Claude Giroux. Definitely among my favourite NHL players, and yeah, as others said... it was a pretty obvious decision for the Flyers organization given Giroux's insane skill and the leadership skills he has demonstrated.

I remember the playoffs last year... talk about a guy who STEPS IT UP in big games. His points-per-game were far and above everyone else's in the playoffs as well.

I'm proud of Claude Giroux He deserves it after two amazing years of performance at Philly. Those are good numbers and he seems to be able to lead the team for many years to come.

They haven't said it yet, but it sounds like Pronger's career is over. Sad if true

But props to Claude Giroux. No idea where he came from. Wasn't the most talked about prospect. Guess he got overshadowed by the likes of Toews, Johnson, and Staal but he is performing right up there with the best of them.

One day some of us will look back on the year and look at the chicago, and most of us will realize that it was a small bump in the road to the cup
