Given injuries, goalie situation, the fact competing teams have improved more than we have, I can honestly say I'm less confident about our chances for a cup than I have been in the past couple of years.

With that said though, to predict the Canucks will *miss* the playoffs? Not at all likely. We have far too much talent for that to happen.

In a sentence, I am officially predicting that the Vancouver Canucks will MISS the playoffs in 2013.

Here's why:

-Goaltending fiasco. Don't care about PC responses from the players or the GM, this will be a major distraction that will have an adverse effect on team morale. Awkward locker room. Poor allocation of cap dollars. I've said for a long time that the Canucks really missed the boat by not trading Schneider for something that could've seriously helped up in a Cup run last year, and it will for a long time be a regret of ours, IMO. Whatever we get for Luongo will be unexciting and we'll still have a relatively unproven goalie backstopping an alleged "team built to win now". Not a good combination.

-Complacency. Why didn't anybody go to Europe? Practicing with the UBC team is hardly an adequate preparation for the season. Makes me think that this bunch has largely lost their hunger. A 5-game post-season exit last year adds credence to this thought. By not going to Europe/Russia, the message in essence is that they'd rather stay in their posh Vancouver homes than be bothered to go try and compete to help stay sharp. Not a good sign. Of course, this doesn't include everybody, but the vast majority of the team chose to not play hockey in the downtime. I expect it to cost them.

-Calgary has gotten better. Added good scoring depth in Hudler, and late-season acquisition Cammalleri. Got rid of Jokinen, which is addition by subtraction. Got a proven PP QB in Wideman. Most importantly, a new coach. Would not surprise me at all to see the Flames win the division, somewhat like the Canucks did in '06-'07, out of nowhere and under AV's rookie year behind the bench.

-Edmonton has gotten better. Justin Schultz is going to be a star. I like the Fistric acquisition a lot. Dubnyk was very good at the Spengler Cup. Heavy momentum going into the year. Key guys are already in mid-season form.

-Minnesota has gotten better. Granlund, Parise, & Suter should all have an immediate and material impact.

David Booth's injury announcement yesterday just makes me more confident that this is one of those years where essentially everything's going to go wrong for the Canucks. The Jason Garrison signing is also one that I was/am vehemently against. Don't expect it to turn out good. Sami Salo's presence on the back end will be sorely missed.

And no, I am not "hating", so please don't suggest that I am. This is an opinion of mine that I am fully entitled to. Feel free to debate and/or include your own prediction.

1. Why would the goaltending change from the past 2 years? Lu and Schneids aren't enemies they are friends and will work through it

2. Complacency has nothing to do with the choice to goto Europe or not. When going to Europe you have to leave behind family and friends, some players are willing to do that some players can't.
Even then we had Hansen, Schneids, Wiese, and Raymond goto Europe

3. I like Hudler but he's not a deal breaker type guy, calgary has always been weak down the middle and they will be as such this year as well. There is no change for them they will be fringe playoff contenders as always

4. Edmonton's defence still young and crappy, sure Schultz will be good but will that be this year? he'll create chances for both the opponents and the oilers because that's what young players do. Edmonton's kids I think are going to be hit with a ton of injuries and they'll be near the bottom again.

5. Minnesota has gotten better on paper, we'll see how it turns out.

6.Injuries happen every year, this year no different, teams will figure a way to get through it via commitee. At least it hopefully gives us a chance to play our young guys and give them a chance.

The OP has made some points, albeit on the pessamistic side.
- Our Goal tending issue is not a distraction for the Canucks , we have 2 of the top 14 , they are buds so no prob.
The Op has made no allowance for our marginal players or severely injured players to make a return ( Raymond/Manny) to form.
The OP has failed to recognize the emergence of some young talent ( Kassian, Ebbett, Volpatti & ?)
There is opportunity for players to step up , especially in their final years of contract.

Have some of us forgotten that we have lost key players to long injury's? Kesler, Sedin, Raymond...etc. Also at times our Defense has been down to depending on our spares?? This team has great chemistry...working out at UBC builds great team unity as well as do a lot for the locker room. Vancouver has reach the playoffs by working as a team.
And just to throw in...Booth wasn't an important piece...yes he is an NHL'er but his production hasn't been great.

Have we really had a second line lately....Higgins is more of a 3rd in my mind. Raymond hasn't been in top form for two years....Personally i'm excited to see one of our prospects get a chance at top minutes...or atleast to crack the lineup. Not many teams can shift their lineups as much as we can.

But this team could easily be whole with a new piece involved as well by the time the playoffs start. All the Canucks have to do is make the playoffs. After that its anyone game. I could care less where we end up in the standings as long as we enter the playoffs playing well and healthy

I've yet to see much of an issue between the goalies. It's possible they trade Luongo and the pressure gets to CS. The team would be in trouble should that happen.

I think going to Europe could be seen either good or bad. I would have preferred guys stayed home but trained fairly hard. But I think every team has some guys that are more prepared than others.

The Canucks have injury problems on the second line but the up side is that secondary scoring is a disappointment almost every year.

The Canucks have so many decent/good players close to the prime of their career it's hard to imagine them missing the playoffs for any reason other than injuries.

We have been one of the most injury prone teams in the NHL over the last 4 seasons. Edler, Salo. Kesler, Hamhuis, Raymond, Daniel, Burr, Booth, Ehrhoff, were all lost for a number of games and many at crucial times during the season and playoffs yet this team has always seemed to persevere, and every year at the beginning of the season people talk about the team tanking for one reason or another.

This argument about players being complacent because they did not go overseas is silly. Most of the people who went overseas had family there in the first place. Most players on the Canucks have family in Vancouver, what's wrong with taking advantage of the lockout to be closer to home. Heck if anything else, I think the fact that the players working out of UBC together will end up building better Chemistry together.

Having two great goalies (given no trades) is NOT a reason to not make the playoffs!

Injuries on the second line might be more of a problem, but I still expect them to make it, just not as high a seed as they have for the last couple years.

There is a difference to having some concerns and wanting the team to fail to justify your negativity. I have stated my concerns about certain players but would always be ready to eat crow should they prove me wrong and I hope to be proven wrong as well.

If you were always a fan of the Canucks then you need to not let your hatred for Gillis make you want failure for the entire team and city. If you just cannot do that no matter what, the Sabres have a web site too and you should just completely convert.

Oh, and if the Canucks do fail this year, do not pretend to be insightful or clairvoyant. Your posting is more akin to the guy that posts "fake!" on every youtube video. Being accidentally right? Well even a blind dog gets a bone once in a while.

As for some others here? Being negative doesn't make you realistic any more then being positive makes you a fanboy.

LOL @ Calgary winning the division, good luck with that prediction.

I believe we will make the playoffs, not sure we will win the Presidents Trophy though, although that's not the goal anyways.

The fanboys will disagree with you because you aren't predicting a Cup win, and their blind faith masks any attempt to actually look at the "real" picture.

Sadly, I agree with you. I'm a die-hard, have been for 35 years, but I have a bad feeling this year, essentially for all the reasons you stated. Players not going to Europe is a real concern of mine. I could easily see a 3 win and 7 loss start to the season, which will make it very tough on them.

Hope I'm wrong.

-Who talks about a guaranteed cup win? We can't even get this city to get past complaining about the refs and bettman.
-At the start of the season, most teams who aren't Edmonton, Columbus, or Toronto have at least a decent chance at the playoffs - yet we have people here who are almost guaranteeing a missed playoffs for the team that have recently won the president's trophy twice.

OP deciding to troll is a troll, no matter how much reasoning there is behind his opinions, arguments, characterizations, etc.

Playing in Europe isn't always a good thing.

Ask a Kings fan how thrilled they are that Anze Kopitar went to Europe. And I'm sure the Sharks are pleased to be without Jason Demers for 4-6 weeks after breaking his wrist at the Spengler Cup.

What a lode of crap. Seriuosly give your head a shake. Im not saying that we will win the Presidents trophy or even our division but to say we won't make playoffs?

While some teams have improved, some have not. Nashville without Suter. Detroit without Lidstrom. Some teams have as many question marks as we do, they are dealing with injuries just like we are. Calgary is Iginla healthy? Edmonton aside from Shultz who is an offensive dman who will keep the puck out?

Vancouver
Edmonton
Calgary
Colorado
Minnesota
Dallas
Detroit
St Louis
Chicago
Nashville
Anaheim
San Jose
L.A.
Phoenix
Columbus

You're going to tell me that 8 of these teams are better than Vancouver?

I don't see how King of the ES hasn't repeatedly violated forum rule #7:

ALL he does is attempt to antagonize Canucks fans.

It's called an opinion, and it's a valid one.

If you can't handle reading an alternate view than your own, maybe a message board isn't the best place for you.

Why should I be banned for this? And how is this trolling? I'm making an opinion - which I've backed up with reasons.

Deb, I take it that you don't often get out of your CDC bubble, but I assure you that this a pretty common opinion amongst people elsewhere. Listen to the radio. Read newspapers. A lot of people have high concerns about this team. I happen to be one of them.
