yea why are they dumping a C when rumors are Gillis wants two C's from them?

Maybe they signed McClemment for insurance. Say they trade us Bozak++ for Luongo. Their forwards would then look like this:

Lupul - JVR - Kessel
MacArthur - Grabovski - Connolly
Kulemin - Steckel - Kadri
Brown - McClement - Rosehill

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

How's he unproven?

Lombardi: http://www.hockeydb....y.php?pid=43804

Canuck example: Manny Malhotra

- Good trade for Phoenix.

Maybe unproven wasn't the right word, I ment struggling. He is a good player and I know alot about him I'm actually a fan. its just that he has battled injury troubles and didn't really look that good last year with the Leafs, so it's tough to tell if he can be that player again.

I guess unproven is the wrong word, & I would say he is more like Raymond myself, same situation too with better defensive skills.

Sounds a lot better now. :P

Carlyle has already mentioned he won't be putting JVR at center to start the season. Doesn't mean that won't change, but it'd be Gabovski and one of Bozak or Kadri in the top 6 (Bozak's been paired with Kessel and Lupul in camp). Then they'd have Steckle and McClement in the bottom 6.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Leafs trade Lombardi to Phx for a conditional pick. Toronto also retains some salary in deal.
Toronto eats Lombardi's $500,000 signing bonus, plus some additional salary.
Toronto gets a 4th for Lombardi. A 3rd if he re-signs in PHX.
Leafs have talked about giving younger players a chance. Can't just say it...have to do it. Moving Lombardi opens up a spot.

So this is the first trade under the new CBA where a portion of the salary is retained. I'm interested to know what amount of the cap hit is moved too.

Could be a bit of a yard stick for evaluating new operating procedures and trade values for unwanted contracts.

Wasn't Lombardi already on PHX once before and they let him go to free agency? Little odd snagging him back.

Clearing up cap space...?

Well, they also just opened up a roster spot on a team that already has very little depth, and trading for Luongo opens up even more roster spots because they'd have to give up a proven impact player and a blue chip prospect who is borderline NHL-ready.

If they make the Luongo trade, that's 2 spots empty that they need to fill, and their top prospect to fill that spot will also be coming our way.

So no, probably not.

Lombardi is their version of Mason Raymond

Their team is full of Mason Raymonds.

Agree with Nonis on this one. To say that Lombardi was a disappointment there would be a really nice way of putting it. No point in prolonging it.

Lombardi was a cap dump from nashville. Dont think anyone was expecting much.

Players sure do fail in toronto. it s like a black hole.

Wow, Lombardi's talent was constantly made fun while he was a leaf. Now he's traded to another team and its a great deal for them?

Please, please tell me that none of you who posted such insanity are ever going into politics or vote, for fear of being eligible for jury duty. Your opinions and beliefs are so biased its unbelievable really.

You guys realized this guy played for Phoenix before and thrived? Thus landing him his fat contract with Nashville, but injuries prevented him from doing anything. He would of been perfect with Nashville...

Hmm, hopefully he can do well in Phoenix, they surely came out on top on this deal for a 3rd pick at best to the Leafs. Well at least the got rid of a lot of salary. I hope Phoenix gets back into things, they lost out with Ray Whitney went to Dallas. Best of wishes to Lombardi in Phoenix.

It looks to me like Nonis is setting this up as a rebuilding year. I would bet that he is pretty much out of the Luongo sweepstakes. I think they are going to go young and try a real rebuild this time. Not going to help the Luongo trade market.

Good move for both teams really. Phoenix doesn't give up much and get some salary help and Toronto gets rid of someone who was ineffective for a draft pick.

Good deal for both teams AND the player. Curious along with TheMinister as to how the salary splits will work. So TO keeps half a mill in signing bonus...one would imagine the million dollar signing bonus in all three years of the deal upped his cap hit in all three years by a million, so with this being his final year, if TO is keeping 500k of that signing bonus on their books, then the overall cap hit of 3.5 is now only 3m for Phoenix.

Nonis is starting the hard process of rebuilding the team. Poor guy. Something that should have been started 4 and a half years ago.

Players Nikolaj Ehlers have been compared too by the fan base of the Vancouver Canucks.

1 Pavel Bure

2 Markus Naslund

3 Nathan Mackkinon

4 Jonathan Drouin.

5 Jonathan Tavares

combine results.  Ehlers 5'11 162 lbs of solid rock.

Nonis' version of rebuilding a team:

- Trading 2nd round picks to try to make the playoffs.
- Signing players who have a proven track record of not performing and hope they have a break through (Ritchie? Isbister?).
- Using the mid-1st round pick (after going for a playoff run, but missing) to draft a player from his 'gut' (White? Grabner?)
