How long before KotES starts a thread about how the Canucks can't win with this D because we have no #1 d-man?

Over-under... 2 days?

So...

Hamhuis-Beiksa
Edler-Garrison
Ballard-Tanev

Than next year...

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Corrado
Garrsion-Tanev?

My guess anyways...

you can pay a ton for your D, but you have to have somebody being paid less.

bye ballard... A shame it didn't work out.

Great deal. Clearly took less to stay. I love the mentatility our players have. We're very lucky to have these guys constantly re-signing at less than market value.

5 Million is an absolute steal but people will complain about this deal later on, similar to how people have hated Luongo's contract if he slows down after a couple of seasons. 6 years is a great time-frame though considering he'll probably hit his prime next season or the year after that.

As for the Cap, WTF is Gillis gonna do now? Last time I checked we were about 2 or 3 million just under the cap, now with Edler's extra dollars we'll be right up against it with no room to sign an essential center.

I love how Gillis has invested so much of our cap in defence, our top-4 is now solidified for the next few seasons and defence does win championships, but we are quite imbalanced now and lacking centers badly. Not sure what's more important to win a Cup - a good defence or depth at center.

Good questions, but I think they are answerable. Assuming Luongo is traded, that's Edler's contract with some left over. With a few other guys gone after this season, the Canucks can still ice a solid team with raises where they are due.

regards,
G.

You gotta believe that GMMG has got some sort of plan, and that he and his team know their cap situation better than anyone.

We also have the option of buyouts next season, not saying it's ideal, but it's an option.

Yup, there's a number of options available to make room, and time in order to do it.

So I guess Gillis is still on thin ice. Another nice signing from Gillis, I am happy to see Edler stick around for another 6 years. He is only getting better and better every year.

I always said Edler not going anywhere. He's a Canuck for life. Future Norris winner.

Great deal. $5 mill per year is a good deal for Canucks, he'll look like a huge bargain in a couple of years. Already is a bargain actually. Could have easily gotten $6+ mill as UFA in the summer.

Once Ballard is gone and we get one more great winger to play with Booth and Kes I think our team is set for the next 3 seasons. Hopefully Lu can land that forward or Kassian develops rapidly. Id be fine to keep Mayray and Hansen as a chippy speedy 3rd line. This signing really gives us a balanced d corps and flexibility to focus on getting elite scoring help to go on a cup run.

considering what he got paid over the lockout, maybe half of his salary for the year? thats a cash advance of +$1,625,000 on top of his signing bonus and new contract

Very good point. When he was being paid during the lockout (injury) I thought there was a chance he wasn't really injured and it was a way for the team to keep Edler happy and pay him a bit now and shave it off the next contract. I might have even made a post suggesting this.

Woooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

6 years at 5 Million per, for a guy who I guarentee would be offered upwards of 6.5 - 7 Million on the open market.

who as it that was saying MG wasn't a good GM???? :towel:

I'm absolutely shocked he signed that low. You have his open market value right. He really took a discount to stay here. Then again our Swedes have a history of signing below market value. We have an extremely affordable top four considering the quality.
