Most of the team played a lot better than last night.

Hamhuis-Bieksa; solid and way better than last night

Edler-Garrison; alright, but made some mistakes out there. Edler looked amazing in the first period but sorta slowed down later. Garrison looked identical to J. Schultz on the Oilers making few mistakes and making good plays in the O zone.

Ballard-Tanev; both guys put each other in tough spots throughout the game. Didn't play as good as last night but still pretty solid. Ballard had a few brain farts out there and Tanev did a great job at bailing him out. Tanev made good plays and skated well out there.

Volpatti was great but began to disappear as time went on. Had some good chances as well.

Malhotra played great on the pk but didn't do much during even strength.

Burrows, Higgins, and Raymond were all missing throughout the first two periods but began to show up in the third.

Hansen was solid, sorta disappointed at the fact that he's not playing as gritty as the 10-11 Hansen, but he made up for it by having some takeaways and making some good plays out there.

Ebbett seemed to carry down his line whenever he was on the ice.

Weise wasn't hitting as well as he was last year but had some chances out there.

Kassian was great, looked hungry out there and had a nice showing against Eager.

Lapierre had an average to good game in the first half but was nearly non-existent in the other half.

We're really missing Kes out there.

Lui was great and kept us in it. Good to see he's stil his old self and can give you a chance to win every night.

Hamhuis hasn't looked too good imo...

Eddie looked really bad on the Eberle goal... I'd expect Eberle to do that to Tanev or Ballard but not Eddie.

Kassian working hard and paid off

Weise is looking sharp

Lappy hasn't been as good as expected.

Offence isn't our problem, it's on defence. The whole team, forwards included, cannot give up that many quality scoring opportunities every single night. Either practice more, practice better or change our systems because these players aren't getting it, and this theme goes back to the end of last season too.

The Sedins were spectacular as usual, such a great set up for Kassian and they were working the cycle well all game long. Burrows obviously no longer belongs on that line, he was terrible with the twins and skates too much nowadays. Kassian had a monster game and deserves that spot far more than Burrows - great goal in front of the net and he stood up for the Sedins by punching Eager right out, making him bleed. That toughness is what the twins need, not Burrows yapping.

Higgins had a strong forechecking game as did Hansen, Lapierre had some nice rushes too but was mostly invisible. Raymond made some nice plays but was once again kept to the outside. The biggest problem however was Andrew Ebbett - he stone-cold stopped a few of our rushes and scoring opportunities by losing the puck and was dreadful, not to mention that bonehead penalty he took late in the game that ultimately cost us the game. Healthy scratch next game for sure, I'd rather have Vandemeer center the 4th line than Ebbett on our 3rd. Dale Weise was fantastic, probably our best forward for the 2nd straight game with a breakaway and one partial, just plenty of hustle and he's hard to knock off the puck. This guy looks like Higgins from last season.

As for the defence...oh boy. Alex Edler had one amazing defensive play, rush up the ice and a goal but here's the problem with him - he looked shaky and nervous when defending their youngsters rush. Eberle schooled him on his goal, completely went around and through Edler who's much bigger and should of stood his ground a lot better. Then Hemsky (I think) flew straight past him to score the tying goal. This guy is turning into a real offensive juggernaut, but a huge liability on defence. He looks lost defending without Salo which is a MAJOR concern.

Hamhuis and Bieksa were strong for the most part, Hamhuis had a couple of nice shots get through which is what he's great at but nothing spectacular, nothing terrible. Garrison had a particularly strong game in front of Luongo clearing bodies. His dumping of Smyth saved us a sure goal - in the past that would be a weakness of our defence when smaller guys like Ballard or Salo would struggle to contend with a big forward like Smyth, but Garrison didn't let him whack away and just decked him. Also made a lot of nice plays along the boards to alleviate pressure, a well deserved +2.

Then there's Ballard and Tanev. Ballard skated well but that one huge gaff to Horcoff was the single worst give away I've seen in ice hockey. From behind his own net to a wide open Horcoff just a few feet from the crease is essentially an automatic goal, Luongo had no right to save that and bail Ballard out. For that (and a few other defensive mishaps) we should hope to see Vandemeer or Barker in next game and Ballard out. Tanev on the otherhand was one of our best defenders, probably the best at getting the puck out of our own zone. There were a couple of instances where he was double teamed and still managed to get the puck out, just fantastic work along the boards.

Finally, Luongo is the only reason this game wasn't 5-2 after the 2nd period. The number of quality scoring chances we gave up was rediculous - the team really didn't change much between the first and second game of the season, just goaltending really and a 3-2 loss compared to a 7-3 loss is the difference. Luongo stole us a point tonight when it should of been a lot uglier. That being said Dubynk made some glorious early saves on our PP, but we didn't maintain the high quality chances the way Edmonton did due to our mistakes. 32 shots against, 2 goals against in 65 minutes is remarkable considering most of those were of the highest quality. For the goals against, Edler should be blamed for both of them. The first goal was not Luongo's fault at all - he had to guard the pass to an open Hall so had to go down, Edler should never have given him that angle. He probably should of had the 2nd goal, that was a clean shot straight through but the defence didn't slow Hemsky down at all, pretty much gave him a breakaway. As for the shootout, that was ugly but as expected.

Another terrible game, if the Canucks don't shore up these defensive issues soon they're in trouble. As for Edmonton, they look scary and will light up most teams with that skill. Luongo saved us a lot of embarassment tonight.

Maybe having Vandermeer-Tanev as a 3rd pairing would be better?

Ballard keeps making his usual stupid mistakes, I used to defend him all the time but he just irritates me now with the dumb risks he takes.

Vandermeer will provide a good physical presence in our backend that we lack.

The only guy that seems to hit back there is Edler, seems like Bieksa forgot how to hit after his first season, he used to throw a big hit every game, now he just gives guys little shoves.

Ballard is a waste out there.. he can't do anything offensively, too many giveaways, putting Tanev in tough positions, etc.

Bench Ballard, put Vandermeer out there with Tanev, call up Schroeder please for the love of God, and then send down Ebbett. I don't care if he has to go through waivers he is USELESS.

we gassed out by the third

Or...why hasn't Gillis done something about it?

Example, why hasn't he tried to sign say Gomez for $800,000?

Pretty low investment for probably a way better return than what we do have on the second line.
