Am I the only one to notice this? On his goal, he made a great defensive play to set that up. But he was caught completely flat-footed on the Eberle goal. As for Ballard, he's bad. No other way to put it. Vandermeer, Barker and Alberts are all very capable defensemen, they all have got to be better than him.

Edler looks nervous in the defensive zone defendign the rush without Salo. He needs a calming influence, and what better a calming influence than Tanev.

Hamhuis - Bieksa
Edler - Tanev
Garrison - Ballard/Vandemeer

Ballard and Garrison have played in Florida together so may have some chemistry, one being a physical guy the other a free wheeling skater. If not, we could just have two giant monsters on our 3rd pairing. Each pairing gets as close to 20 minutes as possible, but obviously our special team units remain.

While I agree that Edler is inconsistent, but so is Shea Weber. He made great defensive plays against the Canucks during the 2011 cup run, but was shamed by Kesler on more than one occasion.

Edler will have this season to prove himself to Gillis. If not I could see him being part of a major trade involving the other aforementioned defenseman.

As for Ballard, yeah he made that HORRIBLE pass that almost ended up in a goal, but Bieksa has made the very same mistakes except they were in the neutral zone.

My feeling is Ballard more than likely going to finish this season on a different team.

Thought Edler had a great game and aside from that one turnover I thought Ballard had a strong game with Tanev too.

Edler and Garrison are looking better every game. We lost the skills competition after having thr edge in 5 on 5 play, No need to have knee jerk reactions.

You just answered this whole question with that post, that is exactly what Edler needs, and you nailed it with who to give him, Tanev.

They could've put Stevens and Potvin out there, and Kesler would've embarrassed them. He was superhuman that series. Edler just looks lost too often.

Luongo claimed that he was watching the clock and not Eberle thus wasn't able to line himself up properly against Eberle coming down the wing.

Ballard made some mistakes but he did have a solid game. Not to mention, he and Tanev compliment each other so well. Plus Ballard and Tanev made the best pairing on the ice yesterday.

Ballard and Tanev do a lot of things well but they go unnoticed.

And I believe that Daniel was looking for a penalty after tripping.

It's just two games in, though. Frankly, tonight was a great game. Both teams played well. Both made sloppy plays and both made brilliant plays. Shtuff happens. Edmonton has a good young team, and as much as I would like to punch Taylor Hall in the face, they were good. So were the Canucks. Kassian was a beast tonight.

That he is. Although his salary may flag him as trade bait being a third pairing d-man making 4.2 M.

Nice to see some fans notice things go both ways for Edler finally. Like i always say we almost always see the good and bad Edler every game his consistency is not good enough.

Tonight is a usual night with the Norris style intercepted pass and hard snipe for the goal then turnstyled by Eberle taking a penalty then walked around again on the Eberle goal and several other small miscues.

Against the Ducks he was the same good plays and bad miscues. I have been watching this inconsistent play for years now and it's getting tiring.

Hopefully one day he will really get his act together because we are stuck with whatever he is for a while.

And that's why he's not starting. How the hell can you be watching the clock

Are you giving Edler a free pass for blowing defensive zone coverage with less than five seconds left in the period? I expect a whole lot more defensive awareness from Edler than what he showed on this play, especially given the time on the clock...it's game 2 of the year and he hasn't had the full benefit of an off-season and preparation for the shortened season, so he deserves the benefit of the doubt at this time...but if this persists, we're in for a long shortened season.

i think edler and garrison just need to play with each other more & develop the chemistry that he and salo had. Yes, elder shouldve had eberle on that goal but dosent really make him inconsistent. all defensemen get caught once in a while.

Everybody is taking turns at sucking, which is probably expected after only two games.

Easy to forget that Edler's only 26, but he does have two goals and it'll probably take a while to get used to playing right defense paired with Garrison, as opposed to playing left defense with Salo. Garrison looks good though.

Kassian looked real good, too bad he didn't get an assist to go along with his goal and a fight, ala Gordie Howe.

Hope we see Vandermeer soon, they could use the muscle.

Ballard is alright, liked his hip-check tonight... That one giveaway was terrible though. I think because we're paying him so much, it seems like he should be better. But we just ended up with an overvalued contract and we were desperate with defensive injuries. It is what it is

If Edler needs to be "calmed" by Chris Tanev, we're doomed. It's called a split-second decision from Edler and some nifty hands from a talented youngster.

Edler is our prolific D stud. His good points will be noted but so will his mistakes.

Yeah Edler has been fine, sure hes made some mistakes, so has the rest of the team. Even Higgins looks like hes was on another planet today, (hes one of my favourite Canucks) Kassian was a beast out there, hes playing really well. I think he will make us forget who is that guy they sent to Buffalo? I cant remember? Hod...oh I forgot already.

Ballard, omg, what was he doing passing in front of the goalie, and giving it away!! I was yelling "get him off the ice". Man, I liked Ballard, but now I am not so sure...I hope we give Barker a chance see how he looks.
