Last Year's Standings After 48 Games
Posted 21 January 2013 - 03:37 PM
On January the 22nd of 2012 we had played 48 games last season and here were the standings to that point in the West:
Detroit - 65 pts
Vancouver - 62 pts
San Jose - 57 pts (45 games played)
St Louis - 64 pts (47 games)
Chicago - 64 pts (49 games)
Nashville - 60 pts
Los Angeles - 56 pts (49 games)
Colorado - 54 pts (49 games)
Minnesota - 53 pts
Calgary - 52 pts (49 games)
Dallas - 50 pts (47 games)
Phoenix - 50pts (49 games)
Anaheim - 41 pts (46 games)
Edmonton - 38 pts (47 games)
Columbus - 32 pts (47 games)
We started last season playing around .500 hockey for the first month before going on a tear to almost take the West, and we can obviously do it again. 48 games is not too little for the Canucks to heat up and catch up in the conference so don't worry about this slow start, it's characteristic and the good teams will rise to the top by the end of the season, even if it is only 48 games.

Certainly going to be our #1 defensemen. Give him a couple more years to improve his game and he'll be our new and improved version of Matthias Ohlund in no time

McCoy: We were speculating. Is God really out there?
Kirk: Maybe he's not out there, Bones. Maybe he's right here. [points to his heart]

Although the Canucks have typically been slow starters. So I wouldn't worry too much about the first two games. In 2010-11 we went 1-2-1 to start the season.
Once this team finds its groove though they have the ability to roll through the wins.

Here's a good analogy - more based on not just the first 65 games:
Excellent info. Definitely shows how consistent the Canucks are, more so than any other team. Everything about our team is based on various stats and metrics. Those stats inform our play style which is geared towards consistency. I get the vibe that Gillis' version of moneyball would make most statisticians cry. I really would not be surprised if we held off on playing our best hockey until March so that we can hit our stride when other teams are tired and carry that momentum to the SCF.
An interesting aside is that 2 other teams mirror our consistency, albeit with slight smaller points totals due to not spending to the cap/not having as much talent: St Louis and Nashville. However with the loss of Suter, I don't see Nashville repeating that performance.
