I always like to hear what Gillis has to say and didn't see it in the forum yet.

Highlights

“Roberto has a no-trade, so in discussions prior to the lockout, he had a say in where he was prepared to go. Once the lockout starts, you’re not permitted to even talk about player transactions, subject to huge fines and loss of draft picks. Then the lockout ends and suddenly, you’re trying to make a decision in four or five days about a premier player in this league, and it’s tough to make a trade of this magnitude in eight months, let alone four days. So we have him here, and we’re happy having him here.

“The way I see it, if you’re constantly knocking on the door, sooner or later the puck doesn’t hit the post but goes in. Your guy doesn’t get hurt but someone on the opposition does.”

“You trade away picks when you’re trying to win a Stanley Cup, not just make the playoffs. You give up young assets to try to get to the next level. Would we do it again? Certain things for sure. Other things, in hindsight, probably not.

“We have a potential deal in place with one team that has to do something with another player that they have — and it’s not who anybody thinks it is — and so we have to wait. (But) we’ve been offered packages that don’t fit what our plan is, what we need,” said Gillis.
Like, how?
“Excess salary coming back with a [throw-in] player who can’t play in our lineup. They say, ‘OK, we’ll do this, but you’ve got to take this.’ Well, we’re not taking it. We’ve had lots of proposals like that with good pieces that can help us but the other part doesn’t help us, and oftentimes they have term attached to them, so we’d just be turning around and buying out a guy.
“I’d rather keep the guy we know, who’s a good person.”

Luckily,Luo is playing Gillis' game and so far, making him look like a donkey.

Baby, there's an enormous crowd of people
And they're all after my blood
I wish maybe they'd tear down the walls of this theater
And let me out...let me out
Oh, I've been so blind, yeah
I've wasted time, wasted, wasted oh so much time
Walking on the wire, high wire, yeah
But I must let the show go on

Obviously Maybe Florida waiting for Theodore to waive his NTC so we can get a player nobody expects?

Sounds like Gillis is getting offered something he likes. Just has to be patient.

Philly? Tampa? San Jose? NYI?

Key part. If it's not who anyone thinks it is, I doubt he's talking about Florida.

I could see it being the Capitals.

I haven't read the entire article so I don't know exactly what he is referring to on some of his comments but the last part sound quite interesting.

Dwight Schrute: Where is my desk?
Jim Halpert: That is weird.
Dwight Schrute: This is not funny. This is totally unprofessional.
Jim Halpert: Okay, well you're the one who lost the desk.
Dwight Schrute: I did not lose my desk!
Jim Halpert: Okay, calm down. Where was the last place you saw it?
Dwight Schrute: Okay, who moved my desk!
Jim Halpert: I think you should retrace your steps.

Fair point but I read that sentence as

We have a potential deal in place with one team that has to do something with another player that they have — and it’s not who anybody thinks it is — and so we have to wait.

We, Canucks, have a deal in place with a team (but due to something to do with another player eg Theodore NTC) they have to wait to get the player they want (the guy nobody knows about).

I guess it's a stretch but it ALWAYS seems to be Florida. Must be the only number Gillis has stored on his phone.

Yea for some reason Washington popped into my head when I read that it was someone no one is talking about.

I would love to get Johansson or Carlson along with Holtby in a package. That would be a home run IMO.

I doubt it would be Holtby and Carlson but could see Neuvirth and Johansson + maybe a pick or prospect but I definitly agree Was popped in my head when I read that as well.

People here focus too much on having the best goalie in the league. You don't need or want that and you can't predict it. Get yourself a solid, blue-collar workhorse who just does his job and focus on more important things like glaring missing pieces like big power forwards and more grinders.

Quick, Thomas were not Luongo-level hype machines when they won their Cups. They were confident goaltenders who stepped up when it mattered. Get guys with that kind of character and you will have success.

For Mike to even say that in a interview a deal must be real close. If it isn't, this is just going to add to the gong show and be more of a distraction.

I'm sick of hearing about what a great guy this or that player is. Of course it's important to some extent but without the other tangibles of being a champion, it hardly matters.

since last spring ive always felt washington was the ideal team. As they are in a win now mode, they have the skill upfront and have made the playoffs just havent been able to get to the next level, they lack a top tier goalie. And with Oates behind the bench I think they have a good chance i like their team just not to high on their defense or rookie goalies

Key part. If it's not who anyone thinks it is, I doubt he's talking about Florida.

I could see it being the Capitals.

I read it as a player involved that no one is talking about (i.e. not Bjugstad or Kadri or Bozak but someone else). The Caps I still don't see unless they've decided they don't have faith in their young goalies.

Sounds like that potencial deal could be Ilya Bryzgalov with Philly

Sounds like you didn't read the whole thing:

"...(But) we’ve been offered packages that don’t fit what our plan is, what we need,” said Gillis.
Like, how?
Excess salary coming back with a [throw-in] player who can’t play in our lineup. They say, ‘OK, we’ll do this, but you’ve got to take this.’ Well, we’re not taking it. We’ve had lots of proposals like that with good pieces that can help us but the other part doesn’t help us, and oftentimes they have term attached to them, so we’d just be turning around and buying out a guy."

What about Bryz fits that quote? Excess salary, term and buy out all do. That pretty much rules out Bryz, DiPietro, Komisarek, Lecavalier or any of those types of players..
