The sense of freedom, yet we really aren't free.

I didn't go on a long-winded tirade explaining how foolish the cherished beliefs of the majority of the planet are.

I cherish science, but then again being different from the majority is a good thing.

Religion

If this is the definition of affection:

Affectation (n): the act of taking on or displaying an attitude or mode of behavior not natural to oneself or not genuinely felt

Then no, religion can't be an affection for it is "natural":

Ok...how many "false" Christians make themselves a nuisance (WBC, etc) while hiding behind bible verses et al...displaying an attitude or mode of behavior (self-righteousness) not natural (hopefully) to oneself or not genuinely felt? I hear people yakking ALL THE TIME about how a "true christian" would never act like that (insert scenario here, whether it be claiming god told them to murder their kids, picketing funerals, holding homophobic signs, etc) so the "false" christians are almost certainly guilty of an "affectation".

To expand on the ego thing, I think the idea that we matter or are at all relevant in the grand scheme of things is silly. We're hairless apes on a mote of dust whirling through the vast great nothingness. Nothing we ever can or ever will do truly matters in the grand scheme of things. When we die, all that is left is our memory, and shortly after even that will fade. Yet we delude ourselves into thinking we're important. We're some bigshot because we have a big house or a fancy car. We're important because we hold some title in some organization. We matter because lots of people know our name.

Still, I can see why people believe it. The realization that your entire life is irrelevant is depressing, to say the least.

^^^ Pretty much what I meant. Also our continuing belief that we are individuals and independent is a direct result of the ego. There really isn't any evidence of that except in our own minds.

/ You know what's sillier than religion?

Arguing about it.

Know what's sillier than an argument about religion? 10,000 threads about gun violence. A religion debate actually seems refreshing right now.

"These are the things to keep in mind. These are not just academic exercises. We're not analyzing the media on Mars or in the eighteenth century or something like that. We're dealing with real human beings who are suffering and dying and being tortured and starving because of policies that we are involved in, we as citizens of democratic societies are directly involved in and are responsible for, and what the media are doing is ensuring that we do not act on our responsibilities, and that the interests of power are served, not the needs of the suffering people, and not even the needs of the American people who would be horrified if they realized the blood that's dripping from their hands because of the way they are allowing themselves to be deluded and manipulated by the system."
