I'm in the camp where I believe no one has any idea what Gillis really wants from these "insiders". Gillis is incredibly secretive and holds his cards to his chest at all times

My best guess is that we are seeking a big and tough young blueliner, a big 3rd line centre and a back-up goalie. If he cam squeeze a pick too he'll take it, of course. Something like Matthias, Ellerby, Clemmensen and a 2nd for Lou and another smallish piece. If it differs much more than this in shape and player molds I'll be pretty surprised but, on the other hand, MG has always surprised me before.

Apparently Dreger said Kings want a 'high pick and good young player' for Bernier. LOL! Is anyone else thinking this is absurd.

Dregers spent the better part of the last 8 months wining about Gillis asking too much for Luongo. From what I can garner, the difference in asking price is a 'roster player'. Berniers a back up with below avg SV% on a defense first team, Luongos resume speaks for itself.

I agree - relatively, it's absolutely ridiculous - guy has played 49 nhl games, .908 sv%, and as you say, on a team that collapses in front of him - imo relative to talk of Luo's value coming out of Toronto, Bernier is worth a 4th round pick.

Yah, I agree with you. I was really just guessing about asking price. It generally seems to be: pick, roster player, top prospect. But after 8 months, nobody really has a clue.

Bernier has far more upside potential, is 24 years old, and is not signed until 2022. His NHL numbers after 49 career games are promising.

I'm not sure why people seemingly have such difficulties understanding the driving force of this deal, which is only one thing: Roberto Luongo's contract.

As the poster below said, his career NHL SV%=% is .908. I'm not sure how promising that is. Sure he's younger and you have ability to give him your own contract - but he's a back up. Paying that price for a back up with below avg #'s is a bad deal.

Ya, not sure what his value is, but is DEF not what Lomardis asking IMO.

Shouldn't be a surprise. We all agree that Schneider would bring back a lot more than what Luongo would. Well, Bernier is pretty comparable to Schneider. NHL numbers are not as impressive, but they're nonetheless impressive, and he's 2 years younger.

Both were 1st round picks who's NHL careers probably should've been further along by this point, but for the presence of an elite NHL goaltender.

Far lower risk, and higher upside potential.

5 SO in 49 games is impressive. For context, Schneider also has 5 SO, but he's played in 72 games.

That's pretty sad that he's had 5 SO and a career .908 SV%. Doesn't help your argument.

Actually, Bernier is comparable to Reimer (.912sv %, larger sample size), but Reimer has better numbers in front of a horrendous blueline, so yeah, why would Toronto want Bernier?
That price for Bernier is going to be a much tougher sell than Luongo's.

I've had NYI as my dark horse for a Luongo deal for months but now but there are some significant factors that make the deal tough. One, NYI don't have the kind of money Vancouver does and too, would Luongo be interested in moving to Long Island/Brooklyn for the remainder of his career to play with a young and up-incoming team. Other than that, Islanders would be perfect trading partners for us.

You tell me, you're the one refuting it. By they way, Kings may not have won the Presidents Trophy - but they did win a little thing called the Stanley Cup recently. It would suggest they have a pretty good team as well.

Reimer was taken 99th overall; Bernier was taken 11th. One was a pleasant surprise, one was expected to be a potential franchise goalie (and could well still be).

None of you seem to either understand or accept the fact that Luongo's contract makes him very unattractive to most teams. Just too rich.

How many times will you continue to ignore the fact that Gillis himself said that Luongo's contract WILL NOT affect his trade value/prevent him from being traded?

"Gillis himself"

Yeah, because what could Mike Gillis possibly have to gain by trying to flatter Luongo's contract?

Irrelevant. Reimer has outperformed Bernier at the NHL level, that's all that matters - is Reimer worth a good player and a high pick. I think not. In fact the Leafs are looking to add a veteran nevertheless. What is the market for Bernier?

I second this trade.

Gudbranson, would be the centre piece of the trade, obviously. and we'd take Weiss in, for his contract.

I'm not sure FL would do this deal, though.

One we know is going to be traded and a pending UFA, for a top six center (who is also a UFA this summer) and a potential franchise D man. How can you say no to that??

Yeah, Manny Malhotra is no doubt that 1st line C that Buffalo has long coveted.
