needtogetswole
Everyone is always talking about Kassian - don't get me wrong the kid deserves all the attention hes getting for the first 3 games but no one has noticed how well tanev has played.. hes easily been out best defender.. yesterday was probably one of his best games in a canucks uniform... hes like a miniature Sami Salo - always in great position and always simple.. this kid is going to be great one day. logic
We already know how good he is, but at the same time he doesn't do anything great. He doesn't throw big hits, and isn't great offensively he's just there.
susraiders
He is a very simple defenseman. He will never get any recognition because he doesn't throw huge hits and he doesn't score goals, however, he will be a good defenseman because he makes very few mistakes in the defensive zone and has good vision for the first pass. -AJ-
He's played well so far, but I especially noticed that he play fantastically yesterday against the Flames. A very solid defensive d-man to be sure.
Bananas
Lots of people appreciate Tanev. The reason there isn't much content in the form of dozens and dozens of repetitive threads is because there isn't anything specifically outstanding that he does to write home about. He's simply reliable. Sami Salo minus shot, plus youth and health. Good steal.
schneider
I've always said Tanev was one of my favourite D men. Great at actually playing defense, I don't give that much of a frack about lack of scoring.
Danthecanucksfan
As long as he keeps playing smart hockey, eventually the scoring will come.
disisdayear
Tanev is one of those players who is quietly efficient and without any flash. If he can develop a shot and put on 20 pounds, he will be the second coming of a right handed Dan Hamhuis. He provides the stability to allow Ballard to free wheel at times. Tearloch7
I do believe he should be playing with Edler or Hamhuis .. he is very steady .. a "core" defenceman ..
clutesi
He's always a plus player, wins and keeps possession, calmly distributes the puck very well, and is a really smooth skater. It's great to think he's looking this good entering his second season at the toughest position in the game.
canucklehead44
Tanev is a little bit like Kevin Klein. Takes very few penalties (Klein had 4 last season), smallish frame (under 200lbs), right handed shot, pretty good skater, not completely useless offensively but does not put up points (Klein's best season was 21, 12 goals in 312 career games). Tanev could be a number 4/5 defenseman and play well but in a top 3 role (either top pairing or second pairing with top PK duties) I think he would flounder a bit. 18 minute per night, 20 point, 2nd PK unit, and some defensive match-ups are what his peak is IMO and he is almost there. Connauton on the other hand has world class skills but hasn't been able to put everything together (skating, shot, physicality). The thing is we are almost better off if Tanev plays solid but unspectacular hockey. While we can see his effectiveness on the ice it won't show up on the stat sheet, which should keep in the 2 million dollar or under range (in current money) vs scoring 30 points and moving into the 4 million dollar range. A mistake free, calming presence who can play safe minutes is extremely valuable and doesn't cost nearly as much as a high-risk high-reward style player. Gollumpus
I wouldn't say unappreciated but rather, under appreciated for what he does. The team could do a whole lot worse in that 5/6 slot at the cap hit he commands. regards, G.
DIBdaQUIB
He is a smart D-man with exceptional vision and positioning. Not a big hitter but uses his body well to block-out players and take away lanes. He never gets rattled, seldom turns the puck over and is very good at getting the puck out of the zone and onto the stick of our forwards. . His skating is underrrated by some because he isn't flashy but already this year he has gone on a couple of small rushes into the offensive end and showed he is a very smooth skater and deceptively fast. He's been working on his shot and offensive game knowing it is his achilles heal. I firmly believe once he gains more confidence, he will be a steady 3/4 D-man within a year or two and could eventually be a top 2 D-man along the lines of Hamhuis if he continues to work out and get physically stronger. He's a real keeper!!
Markus Alexander Cody
Just remember, he plays the same style as Hamhuis....... minus the hip check.

Smashian Kassian
Yeah thought he and Ballard were very very good last game, both got around 18 mins and deservedly so. He is a very good defensemen, will never be widely appreciated around the league like he should be but he will be a very important part of this team in a few years, what a stud pickup by MG. Easily the equivalent of a 1st round pick. We made up for trading the 1st to FLA with this signing.
Erik Karlsson
I'm sure once he puts on some more weight and keeps working on his shot it will get a lot better in the next few years. Him and Hamhuis would be a good shutdown pairing. But I don't like a pairing of Ballard-Bieksa or Edler-Bieksa lol... Hamhuis-Tanev Edler-Garrison Ballard-Bieksa

Rypien37
Once he puts on 10-20 pounds to his respectable 6'2 frame and improves his shot he will become a solid top 4 guy.
