Police investigate deadly attack involving bats and a sword

Vancouver police are investigating after a 19-year-old man was murdered Wednesday night in a vicious attack involving baseball bats and a sword.

The attack occurred in a residential area in the 6300 block of Elgin Street in East Vancouver at around 10:30 Wednesday night.

Police say they were called to the scene after witnesses called 911 and reported seeing as many as 10 people attacking a man in the middle of the street with bats, clubs and a sword.

The 19-year-old victim, from Vancouver, was taken to hospital when police arrived but died on route from his injuries.

“They [the injuries] were severe and it’s believed, though it’s up to the Coroner to decide the exact cause of death, that the sword was the cause of death,” said Const. Brian Montague with the VPD. “That’s one thing we’re hoping to do, is obtain that weapon and get forensics information.”

A total of five men between the ages of 19-21 have been arrested so far. One was arrested near 41st and Ross Street, while the other four were arrested at Vancouver General Hospital, where they went of their own accord for an injury, according to police.

Police say the victim was known to them and suggest ties to the drug trade and loose gang connections.

Investigators are trying to determine if more were involved in the attack, or if the victim was accompanied by anyone.

They are still trying to determine why the victim and suspects were in the area of the attack, located just south of Memorial South Park.

Two of those arrested have been released from police custody and no charges have yet been laid.

Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide investigation unit at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
