he wanted TWO years........with the cap going down we would not be able to afford him as MG wanted to go younger.......

As opposed to TWELVE years(Luongo, cough, cough) and it is highly ridonkeylous that Vancouver could not afford him.
Gillis wanted him.It was front page on CDC the morning of free agency that the .org s #1 priority was to sign Salo.
Of course, that was just more spin for the young uns to lap up into perpetuity.

Love it.

Thread from the other day: Gillis hates youth.

Thread today: Gillis couldn't sign 38-year old to a multi-year deal.

Sami has never had an injury free season in his (15) NHL career and I doubt that will change. I hated seeing him leave, but can understand MG not wanting to commit for another 2 years. The Nucks cannot afford to have another 27 game year (2011) from a top 4D. He's a great player, but he's no good to us when he's on the injured reserve list.

Garrison is younger, bigger and stronger. Comparisons after 4 games are pointless. Let's come back to this post after next season.

AT THE MOMENT, down in the south, the Tampa Bay Lighting are really lighting the lamp and with Sami Salo, the veteran D man who use to play for us signed a 2 year (3.7M/per year) contrast with Tampa in the off-season. He's now paired up with Victor Hedman, a 6-6 monster from the hometown of the Sedin's and BY FAR, they are on fire so far. Sami Salo's guidance and experience will help shape how Victor Hedman will be in the future.

Now what I am saying is that we made a mistake letting Salo go and signing Garrison who had only 1 good season and may not show consistency which may be a problem. So my question is, will Salo out-perform Garrison? Keep in mind they have a stacked 1st line down there.

and what about in 2 years when sami is retired and Garrison is still putting up 30 point seasons??? a move like this isnt about the next season. Were trying to build a sustainable hockey club. Thank god your not GM

We did lose out on Salo, but it's not like it was intentional.. MG wanted to sign him, Salo is the one that jumped the gun. He's doing awesome on Tampa, it's always nice to see ex-Canucks players do good on other teams! I think he's like plus-8 and has 3 assists or something like that already, him and Hedman make a great defensive pairing! :P

Garrison will start producing though, mark my words. He is here for the long haul so get used to it buddy! He is still a new player to our systems and to his team mates, just give him a little time. I hate it when fans don't have any patience, slow and steady wins the race- just ask the rabbit. lol

"It's an opportunity, we don't look at it as a last chance... We look at it as an opportunity to do something great. We are going to take it period by period, shift by shift. You just have to be better than the guy across from you... Every guy in this locker room I can say believes we can do this." - Ryan Kesler

Tampa is an awesome city, and if I a couple years left in my career, I'd want to go play there, for sure.

Get a solid pay-check for 2 more years, take it easy in the sun, why not? Salo put in his hard work, and signing in Tampa was a good reward for a solid career.

Salo has 3 points and a +8. That's great for him and I'm glad he's still seeing success but Garrison has our top +/- too. The big difference is Tampa didn't have a game where their goalie totally shat the bed. Factoring in the minutes they're getting and the two teams goal differential, they're pretty much on par, and Garrison hasn't even been properly worked into the PP yet.

4 games isn't a sample size worth drawing conclusions from.

If this was pre-salary cap era, both Ohlund and Salo would be getting those retirement contracts and ending their careers with the Canucks. Unfortunately, when every cent and dollar has to be accounted for, they're just not affordable :sadno:

Salo will outplay Garrison, Kassian is just getting lucky, Schroeder is a bust, Schneider will soon choke, and Hodgson will become a 100 point player.

Wait, how many games have played so far? Oh right :picard:

There's always something to complain about on here isn't there...

QFT. It's ok to always complain about something, IF there was a benefit or something to be gained from doing so. But since these people don't do anything to help the team, it's just more whining.

Until he has an off game, then Cody is god again.

Well because obviously Cody NEVER had a bad game, unlike that bum Kassian. Am I right. ;)
Imagine if we had let go of Raymond and he was picked up by a team like Tampa or NYI and he scored his 3 goals there. Imagine the firestorm on CDC saying MG was an idiot for letting him go. Even though the whole time he was here they whined about MG keeping him!

Sami recovered from every injury he ever sustained which suggests he is the Bionic Canuck.

If this was pre-salary cap era, both Ohlund and Salo would be getting those retirement contracts and ending their careers with the Canucks.

Guess they did not deserve the Sundin Royal Treatment for doing sweet next to absolutely nothing for this franchise.
Loyalty, honor, all those themes that everybody pays lip service to.
Garrison is a welcome addition, very welcome addition, but his style of play is Hamhuis 2 and not Salo or Ehrhoff 2.
This team needs a Salo or an Ehrhoff offensive style D man, besides and adds to what Eddy brings.

Salo will most likely have a injury which sucks I like the guy. If he succeeds, be happy for him he deserves it.

Small sample size is small. 4 games.

Also, Salo also always seems to have a tendency to perform better at the beginning of the season. As the season wears on, he wears down.

I was sad to see Sami go, one of my favorite Canucks of all time

I like the guy so much that he is in a strange catagory where I find myself happy that he is doing great in Tampa and I only wish the guy the best.

Kinda like when Linden, Bure, Naz, Wellwood, Rycroft and BMO left.

For some reason Burt, Mitchell, and COHO sting me a little different.

I wish those guys the worst

Will Salo outperform Garrison? Maybe.

If he does, good for him.

I'd still have only offered him the contract which Gillis did, and I'd still sign Garrison to the contract which he got.

G.

I don't know why you seem surprised. Seeing Salo play good is nothing new to any of us. We know he is going to help the Tampa Bay lighting, knowing that, we also know, he's going to get injured once or twice this season. It's not like, oh its better to have Salo then Garrison. Tampa overpayed for him, and at this stage of both these players careers, it is a much wiser decision to have someone Jason Garrison, rather then Salo, although I love Sami Salo, and I will not be surprised if Mike Gillis made a trade for him at next years deadline if tampa bay is out of the playoff picture.

Players Nikolaj Ehlers have been compared too by the fan base of the Vancouver Canucks.

Troll thread.

Always trolls getting canucks fans going around here.

respect to Sami but happy to have Garrison.

i think he's looked decent so far , better than Hamhuis and Bieksa who look out of sync.

anyway theres a handful of tools that come here to flame Canucks fans with threads like this.

When Sami is healthy he's great but he spends to much time on the injury list. Garrison is a similar player only he's not made of glass & he's younger. I'm not surprised to see highlights of Sami being successful. I also won't be surprised when news come that he's broken again. I cant see were the mistake is. Garrison is just getting started.

Based on your logic, Luongo has better stats than Schneider right now, so obviously Luongo > Schneider...

Currently Bryzgalov's stats > Schneider's stats
But who would you still rather have on your team..

Lol no.

Stupid thread is stupid..

The only crushing sounds Salo will hear are that of the puck flying into the opponent's net... and that of himself after he gets hit :P
