Was watching the Senators - Penguins game yesterday. Pittsburgh get a power play; and Ottawa ice their first box play unit.

You'd think that the Norris Trophy (defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position" in the National Hockey League) winner, the guy they just gave a seven year, $6.5 million per year contract, would be a part of that unit, but no.

Erik Karlsson doesn't play box play, just power play. HOW CAN A GUY LIKE THAT WIN THE NORRIS????

How can a guy who never kill penalties win the Hart? Or another guy who looks just like him win the Ted Lindsay?

Perhaps they are so good at other things that you don't want to waste them on a job someone else can do. Perhaps you don't want them trying to block teed-up point shots. Perhaps this thread sucks...

He does play PK, just not a whole lot.

EK is 175 Lbs, Not really suited to engage in puck battles down low and/or clear the crease. EK's game is geared towards puck possession. Why not use a bigger, stronger Dman on the PK and save EK's energy for what he does best.

That's what I thought but Mike Green of 08-09 will always be my WTF O_O

73 points in 68 games. 31G 42A WTF WAS THIS GUY ON?!

looks like Erik Karlsson caught the Mike Green syndrome. Too bad Mike Green didn't win a norris though.

The thing is, as high-scoring as Green was, he was 4th in team scoring. Ovy was racking up 100-point seasons. It stands to reason that a lot of his points were due to the efforts of others.

Whereas, with Karlsson, only Spezza had more points than him, and even then only 6 points. Third in team scoring was Michalek - 18 points back of EK. He was the primary generator of offense for his team. That is a big deal.

Lastly, there was generally less scoring among D's last year. When Green had 73 points in 2008-09, Markov had 64, and Niedermayer, Lidstrom, and Rafalski all had 59. Whereas last season, Karlsson has 78, and nobody else cracked 53. That's a very wide discrepancy, that set Erik apart from his peers.

If you want to know why he won the Norris watch the highlight of tonight's game winning goal in the Sens-Caps game. Karlsson has turned that team around. Last year many thought the Senators would challenge for last place and they were a playoff team. They still look like a playoff team this year. The kid is for real.

Disagree completely. Hockey may have changed but when Lemieux was in his prime he killed penalties. Hell when Ovechkin could be argued the best player in the NHL so did he. When the Canucks were among the top teams in the PP and PK a couple years ago Ryan Kesler was on both units. I'm just saying that if Karlsson isn't used on the PK it's clearly a decision by the coaching staff that there are better defensive options than him to consider not that they don't want to waste his talent. He is usually playing close to if not over 30 minutes a game most of the time anyways.

He does play PK. its just that the sens have solid PK d men, and so they save Karlsson's 25~ mins for situations when he can make a bigger impact.

The Sedins can PK, but AV saves them for offensive zone faceoffs.

He plays a decent amount on the PK and his plus-minus is very strong for a guy who plays almost 27 minutes on a nightly basis. Really only Chara that has the same kind of plus-minus in the massive minutes situations. He's not Mike Green.

EK65 play 100x better than Mike Green of 08-09. |f you watched you'd know. Karlsson won the Norris for his Lidstrom like play. He is smart in his own zone with the puck, has a smooth transition through the neutral zone and his ability to set up scoring chances all in one possession.

Karlsson can be used as a PK man, but why use someone not as suited for gritty battles when you have guys like, Phillips, Methot, Gonchar and Benoit. It would be like sending out Henrik to kill a 5 on 3…

As per his offensive production, he is on pace for 48 pts this season, which in a full would be 82pts. So yeah it’s a fluke. Keep telling yourself that.

How can Marleau and Thornton be outperforming Malkin, Crosby and Stamkos?

I mean...don't they understand I have them in my pool?
